The Eastern Division of the Snap-on Stars of Karting Presented by the IRL will conclude its schedule this weekend and crown its champions at the USA International Raceway in Shawano, WI. This will be the second year that the series has visited the newer facility, which was unveiled to much fanfare in 2004.
Last year’s event was controlled by weather, as rain hit the area hard on Saturday and the resulting humidity was the story for Sunday. This weekend’s weather is expected to be hot once again with Sunday holding the only chance of rain, according to the weather stations on Wednesday afternoon.
The raceway is 30 feet wide and over a mile long, with serious elevation changes throughout the circuit. Along with a concession go-kart track, bumper boats, a swimming pool, miniature golf and more, the facility is like no other in the country. On Friday, the track will be hosting a brat fry for all the racers and their families, followed by a pre-race party featuring the Shawano High School Band and Miller products at a mini bar in the track parking lot. Next to the pool will be a taping of the EKN ‘Happy Hour with Howden’ podcast show, which is set to begin sometime after the final practice session. That show will be available for the EKN readership sometime over the weekend.
This weekend is an extremely important for many with the divisional titles and national championship hopes up in the air. Some will be looking to gain more points for a chance at a title, while some will just be looking that elusive first victory.
Champion Racing/G-Phactory pilot Phil Giebler (Intrepid/Champion TM) holds his own destiny in the headline ICC class. Heading into the Shawano weekend, the Californian has a 40-point advantage over BTK Motorsports’ Stuart Marsell (Arrow/SwedeTech TM). If the younger Marsell were to earn his first two Stars of Karting victories ever, Giebler would need a third and fourth place finish to be crowned the Eastern champion. If Giebler bags fourth in both finals, Marsell would win by virtue of a tie-breaker. However, winning over what promises to be a stacked field would be a monumental feat. Giebler has a slight advantage over Marsell, as this will be the Florida driver’s debut visit to the Wisconsin facility, being his first full season on the national scene. Giebler was fast at last year’s event in ICA, so he knows the track.

At last year’s event, Team TopKart pilot Kyle Wiegand (TopKart/SwedeTech Maxter) all but wrapped up the Eastern Division ICC championship with a win on Sunday. Although ’06 has been a tough season, with just one podium finish thus far, watch for Wiegand to bounce back this weekend.
Another driver looking to bounce back at this event is MRP-Birel AMERICA’s Wesley Boswell (Birel/SRA TM). Since winning the Race of the Americas shootout back in March, the Californian has yet to step up on the podium in Stars competition. Even with the difficult year since Norman, Boswell sits fourth in the Eastern standings and has an outside chance at the title if he dominates this weekend. He also had the honor of being the fastest ever around the USAIR circuit with a 59.214 lap time.
Philippe Gelinas (Sodikart/SRA TM) has been in the thick of things since the opening event as well. With a best third place finish - twice this year - the Canadian has shown to be quick in the wet as well as the dry. Last year, he earned his first ever Stars victory in the wet at Shawano and will look to add his first of ’06 this weekend. Like Boswell, Gelinas still has a chance at the title, needing some help as he enters the weekend sitting in third.

As it has been the case for much of 2006, the Eastern series has been stacked with top drivers at each event with the USAIR event no different. Recently signed SSC-PCH driver Gary Carlton (CRG/SwedeTech Maxter) will be on hand to try and steal some points from his East Coast rivals. It will be his national debut aboard the CRG brand, teaming up with Mike Speed and the rest of the PCH Motorsports crew. Also on CRG’s will be PSLKarting.com’s Jan Velez-Walter and Cameron Motorsports pilot Mike Vincec, who completed the Formula BMW Licensing Course in Valencia, Spain a few weeks ago.
We must also watch for the always-fast Jordy Vorrath (Intrepid/Champion TM) and Matt Jaskol (TopKart/DDR TM). Vorrath’s winning streak came to an end in Lowe’s where the Champion Racing/Leading Edge Motorsports driver had a difficult weekend. Jaskol finally shook off the East Coast gremlins as he scored two-top five finishes in North Carolina. Both drivers will be supremely motivated.
The always unpredictable ICA division continues its pattern heading into Shawano with Jake Rosenzweig (CRG/Maxter) leading the Eastern battle despite not earning a victory all year long. Besides a DNF on Saturday in New Castle, the PSLKarting.com driver has finished in the top five in every Final. Even with a 53-point advantage with two full days of competition to go, it is still uncertain as to who will be the Eastern ICA champ.

Tied for second is Tony Kart USA’s Joel Miller (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Caleb Loniewski (Margay/Cook Parilla). Miller has rebounded after missing the Final in Norman by earning top five finishes in the last three of four East Coast events including a win at New Castle, as did Loniewski. Both will be keeping on eye on Rosenzweig all weekend as well as each other.
Lowe’s winner Chris Larson (Gillard/PDB Parilla) and Team Topkart’s Johnny Johnson (TopKart/DDR Maxter) sit fourth and fifth in the standings and will need a lot of help to go home with the Eastern crown but they will certainly be at the top of the charts all weekend. After retiring from Stars competition, then making his return to the driver’s seat at Lowe’s in ICC, the number eight plate of Chris Wehrheim will make his return to ICA this weekend aboard a TopKart/MISI Comer package.
The Spec Racer division is a close battle with Brandon Adkins (Margay/Parilla) and Adam Johnson (TopKart/Parilla) just separated by 15 points heading into the weekend. Adkins has the advantage with three victories but Johnson could take home the title with two victories.
Brett Smrz (First Kart/Woltjer Parilla) has a 50-point advantage over Carlos Munoz (Birel/Porfesa Parilla) in JICA with Dusty Davis (Maranello/Pitts Parilla) and Jacob Neal (CRG/High-Rev Parilla) tied for third. All three challengers will need some luck in order to catch Smrz in hope of the Eastern JICA title.
The Cadet fight is just as close as the racing action on track with Gabriel Chaves (Nevoso/Fleming Comer) holding a 10-point edge over Sebastian Ordonez (Juncos/Pitts Comer) with defending National Champion Sage Karam (Birel/Fleming Comer) just five points back of Ordonez. Sitting fourth in the standings, Oscar Tunjo (Nevoso/Pitts Comer) also has a chance at the crown, trailing Chaves by 30 points.
