It was a quick day for the karting paddock today as both groups of the Barber Pro Kart Invitational at the Barber Motorsports Park ran 20-minute practice sessions first thing in the morning. The weather was overcast with the temperatures much lower than yesterday. Many of the drivers spent the session setting up for the early Sunday morning qualifying session to set the grid for the main events tomorrow afternoon.
As is the case with most karting events, only half of the drivers paid attention in the drivers meeting as they requested transponders on all the karts for the session. Thus, there were no official times available for many of the suspected front runners.
J.R. Osborne (P-1/GasGas) is the overall leader currently in his ICE machine with a 1:27.936 lap time. Claiming the fast lap in practice today for Formula E was Johnny West (MSR/Honda RS) with a 1:29.548 however, many of the fast Formula E drivers did not record a lap, misplacing their transponders this morning. Reggie Brown Jr. (P-1/BRC250FE), Pat Yoshikane (P-1/Yamaha TZ) and Chris Taylor (Turfrey/Yamaha TZ) all look to be fast as well. Derek Eastty (Nemesis/BRC250FE) switched engines after yesterday’s practice and merely broke in the new power this morning.
With Osborne joining the ICE group, the fight at the front of the field will be eventful. Defending champion Andy Kiker (Anderson/Honda CR) looked just as fast this morning. Texan Jim Ingram (PVP/GasGas) worked on a qualifying but should be a factor tomorrow and Jason Slahor (Colbalt/Yamaha YFZ) will look to add to his Mid-Ohio podium finish.
The SKI F125 group was led by April Barber winner Mike Spear Jr. (Emmick/Pavesi) with a 1:34.772 lap time, nearly a half-second fast then is fast lap during that event. Brian Wilhelm was the only other driver to record a lap time as their was a scoring issue with their group, missing the first 5-minutes of their session.

41 drivers are entered in the 125cc Sprint Shifter class with roughly half of them not running their transponders during today’s morning session. Komyati Motorsports’ Talon Craft, running his first season in shifter kart road racing, led the opening session with a 1:36.044 lap time. He and second on the time charts, Canadian Trevor Hill (All Kart), were running together with Chad Dokken, who also is running a Wild Kart this weekend with Craft. Dokken however did not place his transponder on the kart so no official times were recorded on the two-time event winner. Just 12 Spec 125 Sprint karts made the event with Trevor’s brother Travis pushing his Rotax powered All Kart to the top of the lap chart with a 1:42.763 lap time.
EKN will have complete results from tomorrow’s Qualifying and Finals along with a full report at the end of the day.
