This past weekend was the third round of the George Kugler Manufacturer’s Cup Series at the Michiana Raceway Park of South Bend for the Racersites.com Grand Nationals. Over 550 entries for the event was its lowest count on the year but the competition was just as tough. Rain dampened Friday’s practice for most of the day but the MRP facility kept the gate open so drivers could get some extra time. Saturday and Sunday was nice and hot with two filled days of action.
Adkins Speed Center driver Brandon Adkins was the man of the weekend, taking three Eagles back to Ohio. Taking three of the last four wins in the Stars of Karting Eastern Division in TaG, Adkins continued his dominance by sweeping the class on Saturday. Leading all the laps in the Prefinal and Final, Adkins went on to a 6.779-second victory over fellow Margay driver Matthew Codalata. Later in the day, Adkins completed his second sweep of the day in Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Lite. On Sunday, he grabbed his third Eagle in HPV Heavy. In total, Adkins competed in seven classes over the weekend and was in the hunt in each of them. Saturday included a seventh in Yamaha Heavy and HPV Lite. On Sunday, he wasn’t able to hold of a hard-charging Chris Wehrheim (Merlin) in Yamaha Lite and settled for a runner-up spot. Then in Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Heavy, he was leading until the spark plug boot came off with three laps to go, giving him his only DNF of the weekend.
Three-time Triple Crown winner Corey Reeves (Margay) took home two Eagles from the weekend. Saturday in the Yamaha Heavy, Reeves put on a clinic, coming from the tail of the field to the front by the white flag to edge Mark Dismore Jr. (Margay) to the line by 0.398-seconds. On Sunday, Reeves capitalized on Adkins DNF to claim the Yamaha Sr. Sportsman victory. Reeves also picked up a second place in HPV Heavy.
In ICC competition, Wesley Boswell (Birel) was leading Saturday Final when contact was made between him and Jon Allen (Kosmic). The two were unable to continue and allowed Curtis Fox (Birel) to go on to the victory. On Sunday, it was all Boswell, taking top time in Qualifying and leading all the laps in the Prefinal and Final. Fox was moved up to second after Kyle Wiegand (TopKart) dismissed himself from tech as a courtesy to the rest of the competitors to not take away any championship points from them.

The ICA division was very competitive Saturday with Anthony Llopiz (Kosmic) dropping the quickest lap time in Qualifying. At the start of the Prefinal, Caleb Loniewski (Margay) took control of the top spot and went on to win ahead of fellow Margay driver Eric Morrow, Brandon Bealer (Kosmic) and Llopiz. In the main event, it was a great battle between Loniewski, Morrow, Bealer and Chris Keller (Gillard). Loniewski led for most of the Final until Keller worked his way up to the top spot on lap 14. Keller was able to beat Morrow to the line by 0.257-seconds, who finished just ahead of Bealer and Loniewski.
Other Senior driver to pick up Eagles included Chris Wehrheim (Yamaha Lite), Kevin Nelson (Yamaha Masters), and Amanda Luba (HPV Lite).
Three Junior drivers picked up two Eagles over the weekend. Saturday was Cody Humphreys (KRT) day by taking both the Yamaha Jr. Sportsman and Cadet Jr. Sportsman 1 victories. Battling Sage Karam (Birel) and Nick Neri (Shockwave) in both classes, Humphreys was awarded the win in Yamaha Jr. Sportsman after Karam was docked two positions for an on-track penalty. Sunday was Timmy Megenbier’s (Birel) day, grabbing two Eagles in JICA and HPV Jr. Heavy. Fellow Birel driver Conor Daly picked up two wins, one each day in and Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Lite and Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Heavy. Other Junior drivers picking up an Eagle were Cody Robinson (HPV Jr. Lite), Nick Neri (HPV Jr. Sportsman), and Stephen Kalogiannis (Cadet Jr. Sportsman 2).
The final round of the series will take the drivers to the Badger Raceway in Dousman, WI to decide all the 2006 champions.
