This weekend marks the end of the first half of the 2006 Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by the IRL as the Eastern Division competes in round three of their schedule at the newly paved Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, NC. Its been roughly two years since the national circuit has been to the historic facility.

In ICC, Leading Edge/Champion Racing driver Jordy Vorrath (Intrepid/Champion TM) has to be considered the favorite after sweeping the last two races in New Castle and at Buffalo Bills along with having won five out of his last six races. However, on top of the point’s standings is his Champion team mate Phil Giebler (Intrepid/Champion TM) coming off of a seventh place finish at the Indy Pro Series support event at the U.S. Grand Prix in Indianapolis. Only five points behind is MRP-Birel AMERICA pilot Wesley Boswell (Birel/SRA TM).

One driver on a hot streak is Canadian Mike Vincec (CRG/SwedeTech TM). In his rookie ICC campaign, he has two big victories already, including a WKA Manufacturer’s Cup win at Lowe’s in March and just recently was crown King of the Bay at the Barrie Grand Prix. At New Castle, he drove to two runner-up finishes, except for being too light on Saturday. With a win already at the Lowe’s circuit, Vincec will be one to watch to end Vorrath’s streak.

The usual suspects in the East will be on hand to also end Vorrath’s run and start a streak of their own, including Kyle Wiegand (TopKart/SwedeTech Maxter), Tony Kart USA drivers David Jurca (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Keith Spicer (Tony Kart/Vortex), Stuart Marsell (Arrow/SwedeTech TM) of BTK Motorsports, Jan Velez (CRG/SRA TM) and the very fast Matt Jaskol (TopKart/DDR TM) who will look for some good luck this weekend. Former ICA driver Chris Wehrheim will try to make the most of his one-off opportunity aboard a TopKart/SwedeTech Maxter.

On top of the ICA East point standings is Margay’s Caleb Loniewski (Margay/Cook Parilla) after a thrilling Sunday win at New Castle. Loniewski took his first ever ICA victory at the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup event in March at Lowe’s and should be at the top of the time charts quickly. Second and third respectively are PSLKarting.com’ s Jake Rosenzweig (CRG/Maxter) and Tony Kart USA pilot Joel Miller (Tony Kart/Vortex). Miller swept both ICA events at Buffalo Bill’s along with taking a victory Saturday at New Castle and will aim to bring that momentum out East. Jess Peterson (Intrepid), the West Division points leader will also make the trip to Charlotte, finishing runner-up to Miller in both Finals in Primm.

Two drivers are starting to get settled in ’06 and showed it at New Castle. Rookie Eric Morrow (Margay/Parilla) had a stellar driver on Saturday to a runner-up position but was involved in an early accident on Sunday to take him out of contention. Team OVRP.com’s Johnny Johnson is adapting to his new TopKart/DDR Maxter machine. Johnson drove to his first podium of the year Saturday and was in the hunt on Sunday until his engine expired. Both were at the WKA race in March at the Lowe’s circuit and should be quick out of the box.

Drivers are coming out of the shadows in both ICC and ICA as former top ICA driver Mike Giessen (Birel/SRA TM) returns with MRP for the Charlotte round. It will be interesting to watch him progress throughout the weekend being away from the national karting scene for over a year.

EKN will be bringing full Trackside Live coverage, beginning Friday with a small recap of the day along with the final two timed practice session results. Saturday and Sunday will bring you a full day report and complete results along with up to the second top ten results in the Official Event Discussion in the EKN Forums.
