Race Preview: ProKart Challenge
Article by: Jim Baltutis

ProKart Challenge visits the CalSpeed Kart facility this Saturday for round 6 of the 2006 season. Again, weather will likely again play a role in this weekend’s event. With triple degree temps forecast for Fontana, this may prove to be the most challenging outing yet for the PKC’ers. Those temps, compounded with a circuit that is essentially smack dab in the middle of an asphalt parking lot- will add an oven like atmosphere to the race festivities.

With a relatively quick turn around from round 5, drivers may not have had a huge amount a testing at the track prior to the event, but no matter as many will have already driven the circuit in an earlier round. PKC will again be running the “Nuovo” track layout- a much-preferred choice over the original circuit.

Formula Premier 1 driver Slava Prikhodko leads the champion points battle over the suddenly extremely quick Nick Brinkman going into the weekend. Brian Shafer is in the 3rd spot. In Formula P2, it’s Jon Chott and Eric Ortega battling for the season championship with a Cameron Parsons in a close third.

The Formula Spec 1 championship point battle finds Randy McKee in the catbird seat, with Jeff Littrell applying the pressure. Always speedy Nick Halen is currently in 3rd. Look for Fernando Diaz, Lindsay Kernohan and Doug Hayashi to continue to make moves this weekend for the top spots. Spec 2 action is all about the 3-way battle between Adam Ledford, Bobby Legate and Marc Segal for the top spots…this point battle and ensuing on track action is the tightest in the series.

TaG Senior sees Kyle Heckman in the top spot followed by Howie Idelson and Troy McCall. Look for Jerry Henderson to be quick this weekend, and series regular and soon to be Arizona State University student Deana Kraft to make a move upward as well.

In TaG Masters it’s all Matt Kimball - with John Crow close behind in second. Aram Kushdilian will likely continue his solid season to further solidify his number three spot in the points race.

Formula V1 drivers David Nickols and PP Mastro are the dominant drivers in ‘06 with Steve Ferrario ready to make a move on the two. In V2 it’s Phil Conte in the top spot, with Joe Powers in second. The real points battle in class is between Matthew Maas (third) followed my Mark Black and James Butts- the three are separated by a measly eight championship points!

This season has been as competitive as it can get in the ProKart Challenge- look for more of the same this weekend! It’s sure to be a scorcher; both on and off the track, so remember to bring plenty of water, sun block and be sure to check your attitude at the gate, as this weekend it’s all about fun in the sun.

Next up for ProKart Challenge: A July 8 race in the beautiful coastal city of Santa Maria, CA.
