2006 WKA Briggs and Stratton West hit Las Vegas on Sunday, May 21. The Las Vegas Kart Club played host to the some of the finest 4 cycle Kart Racers on the West Coast.
In true Las Vegas style the LVKC put some nice touches on the event. They did not provide a complementary buffet to all of “players”. However, they did provide a complementary practice to the racers on Saturday Night, the custom event T-Shirts where also a nice perk.
As always the tricky Las Vegas Kart Track keep the drivers and crews busy all weekend.
The JR 2 race provided some of closest racing of the event. The grid for the main had Eric Manual on the pole followed by Brother Jeff, then Kenton Koch. Eric held his lead until lap four when Jeff dove into turn one underneath Eric. Kenton tried to freight train Eric but he ran out of track and fell back into third. You could have thrown a blanket over the three karts for the remaining laps. But all Eric and Kenton could do was play follow the leader giving Jeff the win. In World Formula JR it was Rody Exposito taking the win.
Isaiah Ridgeway won twice on Sunday. First in Jr. 1 Animal he also took home the
New Briggs and Stratton World Formula engine package. Isaiah is counting down the days to when he can move up to the JR 2 ranks and give that puppy a try. Thanks again to Briggs for their support.
The high revving F-200 took to the track. David Lowe set fast lap on the event with a 38.764 on Lap twelve of the main. David was also first to the checkered. Terry Nash ran a tough race with his dependable Briggs based F-200. His motors are really starting to show some good power. Ted Coen took Third in his first stab at F-200.
Eric Nelson ran away from the field in World Formula heavy. Bill and Matt Kaiser raced bumper to bumper the whole main. Bill would take second and Matt completing the podium. It was Paul Moore in fourth and Ray Griswold in fifth rounding out the field (no pun intended). The Father and Son battle between Robert and Grant Shape continued in American Sportsman. It was dad Robert taking the win.
Now if I where a betting man I would have put my money on Travis Lowe to take the win in World Formula Light. Travis would have covered the bet. But he had his hands full. The main as promised to provided the most exciting racing of the weekend. True, Travis led from green to checkered. But he had to hold off challenges from three other karters. First it was David Lowe mirroring his every move followed by Will Harps. It seemed that each laps David or Will would pull out of the line to make a move on Travis. The whole time Johnathan Miller was making his way thru the field. Miller started eighth due a spin in his heat race. Local favorite Sarah Ridgeway led the pack of ladies, Valerie Ercie and Hillary Jones. It took until lap 12 for Miller to overtake Ridgeway for fourth. Harps continued to pressure the Lowe brothers. It was on the last lap when Harps dove low on David and took second. All three Karts now with Miller in tow head in to the infield section of the course. Turn Three a puff of smoke from David Lowe, his race is done. Then in turn four Harps losses his chain. So across the line it was Travis Lowe, Johnathan Miller, and Sara Ridgeway taking the podium positions. Fourth was Valerie Ercie. Will Harps day was not yet finished, after losing his chain he managed to coast to the main straight. He pushed his Kart A.J. Foyt style over the line taking fifth over Hilary Jones by .149 of a second. As it is said, “Any thing can happen in motorsports”.
Travis Lowe now leads the chase for the Fast Lane Racing School scholarship with 420 pts. Also in the running is Eric Nelson 413 Pts and there are another half dozen other drivers with a shot. The Series final is scheduled for August 13 in Santa Maria where
Vegas luck and hospitality will give way to Ocean Breezes and Tri-tip. For WKA Briggs and Stratton Gold Cup West updates please check out http://www.goldcupwest.com |
