| EKN Trackside: Stars of Karting - West #2 - Preview |
| |
The chase for the National Championship gets underway this weekend at the P1 Kart Circuit with the Snap-on Stars of Karting presented by the IRL. The first ever Stars event at the Tucson, AZ facility will be the second event to be included in the Western Division schedule. The Stars’ season got underway last month in Norman for the Race of the Americas event, pinning drivers from both the East and West divisions head-to-head. The East and West will both contest three events each to declare the divisional champions before joining together again in Toronto for the National Finals to decide the 2006 national champions.
The new P1 Kart Circuit was built in 2005 as a replica of the Suzuka Kart Circuit in Japan. The 8/10 mile circuit has 13 turns with a 680ft. straightaway with some elevation changes. According to the track officials, the current track record is held by former karter and Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula One driver Scott Speed, with a time of 48.17 seconds this past January on the clockwise circuit. Just over 130 entries are entered as of Tuesday with many of the teams testing over the past two weeks.

The headline ICC division will have 27 drivers grid for the three day weekend. Heading into the weekend, Champion Racing’s Phil Giebler (Intrepid/Champion TM) currently leads the Western Division standings with his runner-up finish at the Race of the Americas. The Norman event was schedule to be a one-off event for Giebler but recently announced he will contend the full Stars schedule in the ICC category.
Challenging Giebler throughout the weekend include Tad Funakoshi (Italkart/Italian Motors TM). The new Italian Motors driver had a stellar opening weekend in Norman, battling Giebler for the second spot, losing at the line by half second.
Arizona resident Alan Rudolph (RBI/SRA TM) had a strong weekend at the Race of the Americas, finishing fourth, and will be a factor all weekend in Tucson. Two drivers having impressive runs during the East vs. West opening event were Ryan Yop (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Fritz Leesman (GP/TM). Yop moved up 10 spots to finish fifth after the disqualification of Nick Halen (MS Kart/TM) while Leesman needed the Repechage to make the final, and moved through the field with Lorenzo Mandarino (GP/Barks TM) in tow to finish sixth and seventh.
Canadian driver Mandarino will miss the Tucson event this weekend to compete in the second round of the Italian Open Masters series with the GP factory squad. Mandarino currently sits 10th overall in the five event series.
Other drivers to look for include David Jurca, making his second outing on the Tony Kart/Vortex, Team OVRP.com’s Matt Jaskol (TopKart/DDR TM), FirstKart.com’s Daniel Morad (First Kart/SRA TM) and the lone Trackmagic driver Gary Carlton.

Joining the ICC program is the direct-drive ICA division. The Norman event saw many drivers struggle to make the final or miss it completely. Included in the group of drivers unable to make the Final were Joel Miller (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Tyler Dueck (Intrepid/Champion TM). Both Miller and Dueck were involved in a first turn incident during the Repechage, forcing them to watch the Final from the sidelines. They will be looking to bounce back in Tucson, down one event already.
Those with good runs in Norman include Dueck’s former teammate Colby Jenn (Italkart/Italian Motors TM) and ICA rookie Cory Pollock (Birel/High-Rev Parilla). Jenn avoided the wreck in the Repechage to move on to the Final, working his way up to the final spot on the podium. Pollock had a solid drive from 14th starting position to fourth place. Pollock lead the Western division standing heading into Tucson and will look to stay there when the weekend is over.
Other drivers to watch in the ICA division include GT Karts’ Kyle Heckman (GT Kart/EFM TM), Nicholas Johnston (Maranello/Maxter), and Grant Hebner (TopKart/Vortex).
EKN’s Rob Howden will be flying solo in Tucson to call the on-track action and provide the Trackside Coverage throughout the weekend. Watch the Official Discussion Thread in the EKN Forums for continuous updates and the Event Page for reports and results.
