The new season of national championship kart racing is now underway here in Norman, Okla. as an 8:00am green flag sent the new Spec Racer class onto this 0.7-mile facility to begin the run to the National Finals. A full slate of practice is on the docket for today with five complete runs through the order. The series will feature a total of five classes this year, one less than last season, with the headline ICC and ICA categories once again leading the way with the Senior drivers. In introduction of the TaG-focused Spec Racer class has already done its job in attracting local drivers to the weekend and the Junior pilots are dispersed between the rookie Cadet class and the ultra-quick JICA category.
The paddock is absolutely jammed and the parking lot is filling up to levels not yet seen at the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex. A total of over 230 entries have been processed to run in five classes with the ICC category drawing the most support with nearly 70 drivers.
Much of the talk in the paddock is centering around the expected arrival of rain to the area as all reports point to a weekend filled with precipitation. Since the first session, the weather conditions have gone from bright sunshine to cloudy.
The EKN staff is now up and running on the OMC timing tower, however Internet connection issues with our Verizon package are going to hamper our level of immediate coverage. We are currently working with the good folks at Champion Racing to link in with their dial-up system.
Stars officials will be running three timed practices this afternoon, the first round set to test the timing system and the individual transponders. We will be posting the results from the final two sessions early this evening with a pit notes from Friday. |
