SUNDAY, MARCH 19
The cold and wet weather continued in Norman, Okla. today for the final day of this year’s Race of the Americas. All five main events were run in full wet conditions and the winners were able to rise above their competition in very trying conditions. MRP Birel-America’s Wesley Boswell came away with the ICC victory while British driver Alexander Sims powered his PLS Karting CRG to the triumph in ICA. The remaining three classes featured excellent racing with Jordan Musser (Spec Racer), Carlos Munoz (JICA) and Sebastien Ordonez (Cadet). The following are full reports from each class.

SATURDAY, MARCH 18
The projected rain that had threatened this year’s Stars of Karting Race of the Americas finally arrived today, hitting the track with a steady rain through the second half of qualifying all the way to the end of the day. The ICA category took the brunt of the rain’s initial approach, splitting the two group’s fastest laps by over four seconds. As a result, officials decided to leave the groups separated for the Prefinal to make things fair for all those involved.
The day’s schedule included both Gatorz Pole Qualifying and the Prefinals, which set the first 15 rows for Sunday’s main events, and the racing was exciting in all five categories.

FRIDAY, MARCH 17
The new season of national championship kart racing is now underway here in Norman, Okla. as an 8:00am green flag sent the new Spec Racer class onto this 0.7-mile facility to begin the run to the National Finals. A full slate of practice is on the docket for today with five complete runs through the order. The series will feature a total of five classes this year, one less than last season, with the headline ICC and ICA categories once again leading the way with the Senior drivers. In introduction of the TaG-focused Spec Racer class has already done its job in attracting local drivers to the weekend and the Junior pilots are dispersed between the rookie Cadet class and the ultra-quick JICA category.
Friday Notes
As we reported in our midday posting, the opening rounds of today’s practice schedule enjoyed clear skies and the much-awaited beginning of the new championship. After an off-season of testing and regional competition in the warmer southern states, it was time to figure which new team and driver pairings are going to be successful out of the box.

PREVIEW
The 2006 national schedule kicks off this weekend with the Snap-on Stars of Karting MINI Cooper Race of the Americas at the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex in Norman, Okla. Many of the Western teams and drivers have made their way to Norman for the Southwest Regional Cup event with the Eastern squads warming up at Lowe’s Motors Speedway with the World Karting Association Manufacturer’s Cup Series this past weekend. With nearly 250 entries as of Friday, each division returning from last year has seen an increase in entries, besting the previous year’s total by roughly 20 entries.
For the next four days leading up to the event, EKN will take a look at the entry list for each division, breaking down last year’s performances and the moves made during the off-season to weed out the top players for both the Race of the Americas victory and the national championships.
