A few weeks ago marked the beginning of the 2006 Florida Winter Tour and the Kartport.com team opened up their season with the testing and racing at the event.
TAG HEAVY
Tony Navarro (Toledo/Leopard), got a very solid second place qualify on Saturday but a shunt on the first lap of the heat race would force him to start from last on Saturday’s Main, despite the starting position Tony managed a fourth place finish with a bent tie rod.
On Sunday Tony show another great qualify by taking third on used Saturday tires, the heat race went a bit like Saturday with an early contact putting him back in the middle of the pack he pull his way back to second place just to hit the same tire Alexander had hit in the Mini Max race and had to call it a day.
Rafael Navarro(Vinto/Leopard), benefited greatly from testing on Thursday and Friday still could not outpace brother Tony in qualify, race time was a different story, on Saturday’s heat race he took advantage of an early contact between second and third and got by a few drivers to finish second . It did not seem like the best starting place and sure he went right to third at the start of Saturday’s Main, an attempt to regain second almost putting off the race so it was first, second and third separate by about four seconds, a hot pursuit from Rafael would push second place all the way to make a pass for first on the last lap, Rafael tried to slide into second but would not happened, so it was third at the finish line all bumper to bumper.
On Sunday it was third after the first heat from a fifth starting position due to a loose wheel. So it was on the better spot for the start of the main so he immediately went for second with a kart that was superior on the deteriorating conditions due to a light sprinkle, but on an attempt to take the lead he took himself and Dominican Champion Ludovino Fernandez out of the race.
MINI MAX
Alexander Karabourniotis, a new comer to Swiss Hutless found himself fastest in practice on Friday so things were looking great, on Saturday he got caught in traffic and managed only a fifth place start, this would not stop him as he fought his way on the pre heat to a third spot for the main. On the main he quickly made a pass for second and fought the national champion to the checkered flag for a second place finish.
On Sunday it would seem to be all Alexander but a problem in qualifying forced him to start at the back, nevertheless he managed to make his way all the way to fifth for the main, behind the scenes we were all confident that Alexander had finally gotten full used to his new chassis and that the mechanics had a set up plan for the very changing track conditions.
On Sunday’s final it was Alexander from fifth to first on the first lap and he would pull a considerable lead by the half way mark, with the national champion behind on a steamy battle for second place with 36 other aspiring little pros, it seem like nothing would get on the way of a victory until 2 laps from the end Alexander would hit an apex tire and end his day.
The second round of the Florida Winter Tour will take place at Moroso Motorsports Park on February 11-12. Visit http://www.kartport.com for additional information on the team. |
