EKN Top 50 Drivers: #50 – Scott Evans

Putting together a list of the top drivers in the history of karting was not an easy task. The good readers of EKN stepped up in a big way to give us the base list from which to work, delivering their personal top tens via our Forums and through private e-mails sent to the Howden Media Group World Headquarters. Assembling this list was much tougher than we had expected and hitting our planned debut on the first week of January just wasn’t going to happen. This year is, after all, the 50th anniversary of the sport and highlighting our top stars, one each week, was the initial concept.

The staff at EKN has worked hard over the past month to acquire the EKN viewer results and those opinions of the most respected figures in karting. After some delay, the list is now set, and the debut day is finally here. Without further delay, here is #50:

Not to be confused with the tall, husky guy who goes through engines and inspects chassis components in the Stars of Karting Tech Barn, Des Moines, Iowa’s Scott Evans gets the honor of being the first driver unveiled as part of the EKN Top 50 North America Karting Drivers, ranked 50th on our all-time list. For anyone who has raced on the Midwest streets of the United States, Evans is a household name.

Over the years, Evans earned a staggering total of 27 wins at the famed Quincy in the Park Grand Prix, tied for the overall total with karting legend Terry Traeder. Evans picked up his first victory in 1988. Evans also sits fifth in the money leader standings at the Rock Island Grand Prix. He has seven wins (tied for fifth overall), along with 25 top fives and 33 top tens in the race’s 11-year history.

In 1997, Evans added a prestigious honor to his resume, the WKA Constructor’s Championship Formula Y title. Competing at tracks across the country against some of the toughest KT100 drivers anywhere, Evans came home with the big trophy, giving Margay a major accolade that year. Running multiple classes and racing wherever and whenever he can, Evans is one of the sport’s true stars.

EKN Editor-in-Chief Rob Howden often tells a tale involving Evans. “I got hustled into driving a Margay at the Park one year, after Keith Freber invited me up to check out the race,” offers the long-time karting journalist. “I was running Sr. Sportsman and was doing pretty well, I thought, pushing hard as I came from 45th to 12th, I think. When I came off the track, Evans pulled into the pits behind me as the winner of the race, having almost put me down a lap. When I told him how I’d really been pushing the braking zones and had held off the brakes until a certain point deep into one particular turn, Evans filled me in that he only trail-brakes lightly in that corner. I could only laugh. I gained a lot of respect for Scott Evans that day!”

Evans continues to rack up the wins despite stating that this past season may have been his last Rock Island start. In talking recently with EKN, he did admit that he will be back in 2006, having already started an extensive workout program. Racing or retired, Evans has still been a benchmark for countless competition on the street circuits of the Midwest, making him the #50 driver of all-time on our 50th anniversary list.
