Thing wrapped up today for the World Karting Association’s Daytona KartWeek with the final day of races after three days of competition. The Manufacturer’s Cup Series had 15 different winners while the Road Racing Series had 31 different winners throughout the three days. Wesley Boswell took both ICC Final victories while Randy Fulks led all drivers in the road racing paddock with four victories overall. The event was run smoothly throughout the week with a few ambulance runs between the two courses with all the drivers able walk away from the accidents.
Manufacturer’s Cup Series
MRP’s Boswell swept both days in the ICC category with today’s Final ending in a close finish. After qualifying on the pole again for the Prefinal, Boswell had trouble again getting off the line, giving the hole shot to Richard Boake (Birel). Two laps later, Boswell was able to work around Boake and cruise to the Prefinal victory with Franklin Motorsports’ Jamie Sieracki finishing second ahead of Boake. Boswell would get a perfect start for the Final, taking the top spot and getting an early challenge from Sieracki. Close to the halfway mark, Sieracki was passed by both Boake and Curtis Fox with Boake now applying pressure to Boswell. The former SuperNationals winner was able to fend off the challenge from Boake and take a second ICC victory for the event. Fox finished third in front of Sieracki and Jonathon Vitolo (Birel).
Making his Senior class debut this week, Anthony Llopiz (Kosmic) was able to pick up his first Senior class victory in the competitive ICA division. Also making his debut in the Senior group was pole winner Eric Morrow (Margay). Morrow took the Prefinal win just in front of Caleb Loniewski (Margay), Llopiz, and Christopher Stage (Gillard). At the start of the Final, Llopiz got a good jump at the drop of the Green flag and slide into P1 heading into turn one. A couple laps into the race, Llopiz went wide in turn one allowing Morrow to jump into first place. A lap later, Morrow spun and retired from the event. With the laps winding down, Llopiz went wide again in turn one and Stage took advantage moving into first but was short lived as Llopiz retook the lead and went on to win. Chris Keller had a strong run coming from 13th to finish fourth.

Yamaha Heavy had a great three way battle for the win with Kevin Nelson (Margay) taking the victory. After Tim Goettsch (Margay) was quickest in Qualifying and won the Prefinal, he had some carburetion problems in the early stages of the Final and got caught up in a two kart accident, ending his day. That moved Nelson into the lead. Soon after, Gary Lawson (Margay) worked around Nelson for the top spot. The two got together in the chicane heading onto the front stretch, allowing Paulie Harraka (KRT) to move into first. Lawson and Nelson continued with Nelson putting pressure on Harraka, making a pass for the lead in the back section of the course. Nelson held off challenges from Harraka for the win with Lawson in third. The quickest driver on the track, Brandon Adkins (Margay) passed 25 karts in 18 laps to finish fourth ahead of Comet Kart Sales Mark Dismore.
Ryan Stewart (Margay) had a strong day in Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Lite. After qualifying second, he passed pole sitter Tim Goettsch (Margay) on lap three of the Prefinal to take the win and led flag to flag in the Final. Brandon Adkins (Margay) added another podium with a second place finish and Joey King (Margay) rounding out the top three. Goettsch was spun heading into turn one at the start of the Final and was able to finish 18th after falling to the rear of the 30 kart field.

The JICA division made its WKA Manufacturer’s Cup debut with 13 entries filling up the grid. Sergio Pena (VanSpeed) swept the class, earning top honors in Qualifying, Prefinal, and the Final. Conor Daly was credited for the fastest lap in the Final, moving up seven positions to finish second while Julia Landauer rounded out the top three.
Chad Finley (Margay) captured his second victory of the event in the Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Heavy after an 18 lap battle with Christian Pahud (Margay). Pahud had top honors in Qualifying and the Prefinal while leading the first half of the Final. Finley was able to work around Pahud and hold on to the top spot. Conor Daly (Margay) earned his second podium finish of the day with a third place ahead of CJ Lintner (Margay) and Julia Landauer (Birel).
One of the best races on the Man. Cup circuit was the four kart battle in the Yamaha Jr. Sportsman class. HPV Jr. Sportsman winner Dylan Nobile (Nevoso) qualified on pole with Sage Karam (TopKart), Cody Humphreys (KRT), Randall Potter III (Energy), and Nick Neri (KRT) rounding out the top five. In the Prefinal, the top three drivers pulled away with Neri joining the battle as well with Karam beating Nobile to the line by 0.091 at the Prefinal checkered flag. In the Final, the four pulled away from the pack again in the early stages and began swapping positions throughout the 18 lap race. With two laps to go, Karam was able to work around Humphreys after he went wide in turn one. Karam went on to win by 0.075 seconds ahead of Humphreys. Nobile held off Neri for third with Potter finishing in fifth.

Road Racing Series
It was a short day for the road racing teams with only four races on the schedule, allowing everyone to get an early start for home before the New Year. Mr. Daytona Randy Fulks captured his fourth victory of the event after a 45 minute battle again with Scott Greiner in Yamaha Heavy. Grenier lead for most of race with Fulks able to slingshot at the finish line. On the track at the same time, a father-son battle was going on between Mike Spear Sr. & Jr. in the 100cc Controlled class. Though the younger Spear looked to be patiently waiting for a last lap pass, he wasn’t able to stay in front at the checkered flag.
Kevin Kopp was able to add two wins on Day 3 to bring his Daytona 2005 win total to three. In the first race of the day, Kopp took a demanding victory in Piston Port Can Sprint 360 ahead of Byron Rothenhoefer and defending class champion Kevin Learnard. Kopp repeated his run in WKA Sprint where he beat Learnard by 17 seconds, leading both races flag-to-flag.
Three drivers added their second victory of the week on the final day. Erin Sparrow won in Briggs Sprint 360, Barry Taft won the Piston Port Can Heavy, and Tiffany McCollum earned her second Daytona victory in Jr. Sprint Lite after claiming her first ever Daytona win yesterday. |
