Another beautiful day for racing graced the Daytona International Speedway for the second day of racing for the WKA KartWeek event. An early morning rain shower delayed things for the Road Racing division and a short intermission for scoring loop troubles at the Manufacturer’s Cup area, though the racing action all concluded in by 5pm.
Manufacturer’s Cup Series
The first group of the day - Yamaha Lite - was swept by Tim Goettsch (Margay), who picked up his second class win of the event. Goettsch won the pole with a 42.691 lap time, just ahead of Ryan Stewart (Margay) and Tony Jump (Margay). In the Prefinal, Goettsch pulled out a one second victory over Jump, who was able to work around Stewart. In the Final, Goettsch lead the entire 18 laps while four drivers battled for the second spot. Stewart won that battle with Paulie Harraka (KRT) moving up one spot to third. Christopher Larson (Margay) moved up from seventh to finish fourth ahead of Jump.

Yamaha Jr. SuperCan Lite was also swept with Christian Pahud (Margay) taking all three honors. Pahud took the pole position with a 43.831 lap time ahead of Connor Daly (Margay) and Julia Landauer (Birel). Daly would be forced to start the Final dead last as on lap two of the Prefinal, he was spun in the last corner. He would however work back up to ninth in the Final. Pahud lead all 26 laps for the Prefinal and Final races. Landauer took second while the drive of the day went to Zach Busch (Margay) who won the Consolation B race to get into the Prefinal, where he finished 15th and worked his way to finish third in the Final. Eliott Bachelart (Margay) also got the Final the hard way by winning the Consolation A race, finished 17th in the Prefinal, and finished fifth in the Final behind Sterling Shaw (Margay).
HPV Heavy saw Paulie Harraka (KRT) earn the pole ahead of David Kraeer (Margay) and Cale Wyse (Margay) with a 43.473 lap time. Harraka also won the Prefinal with Wyse moving up one spot to give Harraka a challenge and Chris Burt (Margay) finishing third, moving Kraeer back to fourth. In the Final, it was a six kart lead pack with Harraka taking the early lead. Corey Reeves (Margay) and Gary Lawson (Margay) were able to jump ahead of Burt and Kraeer into the top four in the earlier stages of the Final. Lawson was then able to work around Reeves, Wyse, and Harraka at about the halfway mark and never look back. Harraka held off Reeves for second with Wyse and Burt rounding out the top five.

Defending Cadet champion Sage Karam put his TopKart on the pole by 0.165 seconds ahead of yesterday’s Cadet winner Spencer Pigot (Nevoso) and Jaime Ortega (Nevoso). Karam had troubles in the Prefinal and fell to start 17th for the final while Pigot went on to win the Prefinal with Ortega and Eric Filgueiras (Gillard) finishing second and third. Pigot got the jump at the start of the Final while Dylan Nobile worked up to the bumper of Pigot from his fifth starting spot. Though he tried every lap, Nobile was not able to get around Pigot, losing at the line by 0.064 seconds. The win was Pigot’s second of the event. Karam was the quickest kart in the Final and was able to work his way up to third ahead of Sebastian Ordonez (Nevoso) and Filgueiras.
Chad Finley (Margay) added his name to drivers who swept a class for the event as he went on to take the HPV Jr. Heavy division. In Qualifying, Finley had a best lap of 42.872 with CJ Linter (Margay) and Christian Pahud (Margay) in the top three. Finley took the Prefinal win after fighting with Pahud for eight laps. Cody Robinson (Arrow) finished third but was disqualified at the tech barn, moving Linter to third. Finley lead flag to flag in the Final to take the victory just ahead of Linter, who got a great jump at the start. Eliott Bachelart (Margay) finished third with Julia Landauer (Birel) and Sergio Pena (VanSpeed) rounding out the top five. Pahud had a pour start but managed to finish sixth.

Jeff Jewell (Haase) dominated the Yamaha Masters group all day long. Jewell was quickest in Qualifying with a 45.423. Jeff Perkins (Gillard) and Lawrence Ubell (Biesse) were second and third quickest. The top three stayed the same in the Prefinal with Jewell leading all eight laps. In the Final, Jewell led the entire race with Perkins running second. Christopher Rock (Margay) moved around Ubell for third in the early portion of the Final and held on till the end with Steve Rumsey (Arrow) rounding out the top five.
The final event of the day featured the only shifter division in the Manufacturer’s Cup division, ICC. A disappointing 15 drivers filled the grid, about half of last year’s total. The #3 ranked driver in the SKI Driver Rankings Wesley Boswell had a perfect day except for a bad start in the Final. After running the quickest in Qualifying with a 40.327 lap time, he led the Prefinal flag to flag to line up on the pole for the Final. At the start of the Final, Boswell was late getting off the line, allowing Jonathan Vitolo (Birel) and Alison MacLeod (Birel) to take the top two spots. Boswell was then able to work around both before the halfway mark and cruised to victory. Vitolo finished second with Curtis Fox (Birel) moving up from seventh to finish third. Franklin Motorsport’s Jamie Sieracki (Merlin) jumped into the driver’s seat and finish fourth with MacLeod dropping back to fifth. Last year’s Triple Crown winner Eric Morrow made his ICC debut but was unable to start the Final with mechanical problems.

National Road Racing Series
Donny Warren (CRG) got his revenge on day two after losing to Bret Spaude (Veloce) in a photo finish yesterday during the Spec 125 Sprint Final 1 by picking up the victory in Spec 125 Sprint Final 2. Warren beat Spaude by 0.129 seconds at the line ahead of three other Veloce drivers, Robert Varga, Jason Enders, and Dean Boyd.
Randy Fulks earned his third victory of this year’s event by dominating the Yamaha Medium group. Defending champion Dave Hechler had a great battle for second with Margay’s Keith Freber. Fulks came close to a fourth victory in the first two days in Yamaha Sportsman Heavy but LAD’s Scott Grenier was able to beat the Daytona legend after a 45 minute battle around the high-banks. Freber finished third, giving him two podium finishes for the day. In one of the closest finishes so far, Peter Ludwig beat Barry Taft to the checkered flag by just 0.006 seconds for the Piston Port Can Medium win.
In shifter action, 2005 Triple Crown winner Adam Romito (Arrow) switched rides after not making a lap yesterday and made the best of it by taking the WKA/ICC 125 Sprint 2 win and recording the fastest lap of the weekend for 125 sprint shifter division. Dean Oppermann added a second place finish to his win from yesterday and Andrew Chase (PCR) repeated his third place finish, this time making the minimum weight to earn a spot on the podium. In the CIK 125 Sprint class, the race was red flagged for an ambulance run with about five minutes to go, reverting to the previous finished lap. That put Rob Morris (Birel) in the first position, Dominick Pertronzio (CRG) second, and Tim Richardson third. When the unofficial results were posted, Morris was shown as being disqualified for pushing, giving Pertronzio the win. The results are currently under protest though.

One of the quickest karts out on the track today was Unlimited winner Jason Slahor. Slahor was one of only a few to break the two minute mark (1:59.516) and was leading yesterday’s Unlimited class until mechanical troubles forced him out of competition. SKI Formula 125 Challenge vice-champion finished second with Steve Powell coming home in third.
In Sprint action, defending champions Kevin Kopp and Byron Rothenhoefer began their title defense with a dominating win each. Kopp won the Piston Port Can Sprint 340 ahead of Florida’s David Bruinsma and rival Kevin Learnard while Rothenhoefer took the Piston Port Can Sprint 380 class with Chris Hysick and Chris Tomasik rounding out the top three. |
