With the 2005 racing season finishing up last month, the 2006 campaign is set to kick off this week. After everyone found their favorite karting items under the Christmas tree this past weekend, most drivers and teams will break them in at the annual World Karting Association's KartWeek at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. EKN News Desk Manager David Cole is en route to set up camp in Daytona for an entire week of EKN Trackside coverage.
Competitors started arriving at the DIS gates before Christmas Day and the action begins today with a full slate of practice for the nearly 1000 entries for the Dunlop Tire Road Racing Series and Manufacturer’s Cup division, followed by three days of racing. Competition will also begin today for the over 2000 entries expected to pack in the Daytona Municipal Stadium for the opening round of the WKA National Speedway Dirt Series.
A special program running in conjunction with the Road Racing Series will complete its 2005 season at Daytona. The Super Kart Illustrated Formula 125 Enduro Challenge for laydown 125cc shifters will wrap up the championship run as point leader Brian Wilhelm is in control ahead of Texan Mitch White. Two-time defending Daytona winner Mike Spear Jr. will be looking for a third victory with ’03 Challenge champion Scott Fiesler looking for a win as well. Fiesler has been very strong this year and will definitely be a factor in the win.
