With trips to Malaysia on the line, Rotax Max racers have made their way to the newly improved South Bend Raceway Park in Indiana to compete in this year’s Rotax Max Grand Nationals. Over 200 drivers have qualified to participate in the five different divisions with three classes awarding trips to the Grand Finale in November in Malaysia. Competitors from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Costa Rica will be on hand competing for the chance for a ticket to the Grand Finale as well.
The headline class of the weekend is the International class. The big news of the weekend is defending Grand National winner Jordon Musser will not be attending this year’s event. The mechanical engineering student is in his senior year at Texas A&M and decided not to race so as to not get behind in his studies. He will be at the race however acting as a tuner. This will allow a new National Champion for the first time as Musser has won all the National Championship contested.
Festivities began Wednesday with the move in of all the team haulers to the paddock as well as a welcome party in the infield of the circuit. Thursday began the official practice for everyone, as many of the teams moved to South Bend a week early for some extra testing. Today is when the real action begins with qualifying and the first round of heats beginning. Saturday will feature the second and third rounds of heats along with the Last Chances races for those divisions that will need them. Sunday begins with Prefinals before the Final ceremonies begin with a live marching band and skydivers.
SKI Editor Tim Blaney will be on hand to provide EKN Trackside coverage for the entire event, beginning with qualifying and the first heat results. You can also discuss the event in the Official Rotax Max Grand Nationals Discussion thread |
