The regular season for the Snap-on Stars of Karting Presented by the IRL comes to a conclusion this weekend with the final Western Division race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA. Once the checkered flags fly on Sunday, all that will remain of the 2005 National Championship will be the Stars Finale set for Iron Rock Raceway in Austin, Texas.
The trip to Infineon has become a regular affair, as the popular track in Northern California has been a staple on the series schedule since the beginning. The only change is the timing of the event as it was moved to the end of the schedule in hopes of drawing additional entries due to its close proximity to the numerous drivers and teams located in the area.
This will be the weekend for deciding the divisional championships with the top racing being the fight between Jason Bowles (Tony Kart) and Alex Speed (Birel) for the ICC title. As it stands without calculating drops into the equation, Bowles holds a slim five-point lead over Speed. Both are coming off difficult weekends at the last West race in Chilliwack back in July. During that event, neither driver was on the podium – something that hadn’t happen all season long. Joining the field for this race will be former Stars ICC champion Ron White (Top Kart) who is replacing Tad Funakoshi to the #1 seat at RC20/Team Top Kart.
In the ICA class, Genesis Racing’s leader Kevin Glover (CRG) is looking to become the first driver to repeat as a Stars divisional champion. Glover was the Western Champ back in 2003, and has shown good form all season. His closest competitor in the points is Intrepid’s Phil Giebler, who wrapped up the Eastern Division title last month with an impressive win at Woodbine. The September SKI #1-ranked driver Helmut Sanden (Mach 1) is set to return to Stars competition after missing the Chilliwack event due to a scheduling conflict with the German championships.
The Infineon layout has seen some outstanding racing over the years and with titles on the line, this year will be no exception. The weather looks good for the weekend with warm temperatures and no chance of rain right now. EKN will be on hand all weekend with regular updates during the day and a full report in the evening.
