WKA Horstman Gold Cup Series
Round #3
Badger Raceway – Dousman, WI
It was a great weekend overall for the Gold Cup Series. Around 300 entries made their way ALL the way up to Dousman, Wisconsin. It was a long haul for most - especially those from Florida who drove over 25 hours to get there. Briggs & Stratton sponsored a free raffle to win an all expense paid trip for two to Arizona to attend the Bondurant Driving School of which Tony Meppelink won. Quaker Steak & Lube Restaurant sponsored a free dinner on Friday night for everyone.
The racing was awesome, as it always is with this series. Justin Larson grabbed three wins during the weekend however the victory in Briggs Medium is still under protest so it is not official). Kyle Capodice posted wins Saturday and Sunday in Jr. 1 Lite and Heavy as well as Steve Kilsdonk taking two wins in Senior Sportsman Medium and Heavy. All winners received the famed Grand National Eagle trophy and Grand National Jacket or Crew shirt as well as bonus points towards the year-end point standings.
Next stop is November 4-6 at Lowe's Motor Speedway for the season finale. The track has a brand new surface and this will be the first national/race on the new surface.
KART Southern Regional Sprint Series
Round #5
MacArthur Park Raceway – Oklahoma City, OK
MacArthur Park Raceway was the site for the fifth round of the KART/Beason Motorsports Southern Sprint Series. Storms and rain seemed to linger over the track throughout the weekend, but it didn’t stop this group from some great racing and good times. It was declared a rain race early and the people that had them mounted rain tires for qualifying and the Prefinal. But when the features rolled around, the track was dry and the racing fierce.
Chad Riley earned his first win in the TaG Senior class with Rusty Mitchell challenging him at every possible place he could on the track. Mitchell was able to pass coming onto the front straight once, but Riley hammered the gas and was able to get the lead back. Michael Pattison and Lacy Tippett were right on Mitchell’s bumper waiting for someone to bobble, but they couldn’t get around Riley or Mitchell. Normal frontrunner, Kenny Elwood suffered mechanical problems early and eventually fell out of the race.
Evan Brown fought his way to the front in the TaG Cadet class after making a textbook pass at the end of the back shoot. He tucked to the inside and held on and came out the leader heading down the front straightaway. Clay Settles couldn’t keep up after changing from rain tires to slicks and forgetting to change the gear. Chaz Nagel tried his best to catch back up to Brown, but once Brown was in front, he kept stretching out the lead.
In the Rotax Junior class, Nigel Saurino won with Gabriel Bargas in second. Bobby Morrison fell out after his chain popped off.
In the 2 Cycle Jr. 1 class, Devin Mauk drove his usual smooth and steady pace to a large victory. Tyler Thomas started at the back after going off the track in the Prefinal to avoid a kart that had spun in front of him. In the final he made some awesome passes and fought his way all the way back up to second. Nigel Saurino, Andrew Roberts and Jesse Letbetter made up the top five.
The next race in the series will be back at the brand new JRP facility in Tulsa, OK on September 10-11.
KART Maxxis Tires Mid America Road Race Series
Round #7
Hallett Motor Racing Circuit – Tulsa, OK
The KART Mid America Road Race Series raced at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Oklahoma this past weekend. Hallett is a favorite among the drivers because of the elevation changes, vast run off room and its challenging 11 turn 1.8 mile technical layout.
Saturday’s practice was wet with rain showers soaking the course throughout the morning. The schedule was delayed about an hour allowing enough time for the track to dry. No one was quite sure of their setups since they only had rain practice and the races were completed on a dry course.
The racers woke up to rain, rain and more rain on Sunday and with no end in sight, the race director combined all the classes into three groups and started the races at 10:30. With the soaking conditions, only a few people completed their race and many pulled out early.
One good thing about rain at Hallett is the bench racing at the Tower Café. New comers get to sit and talk with seasoned veterans and everyone gets to “remember when”.
The next race will be the KART Enduro National Championships at Lake Afton, near Wichita, KS on September 9-11.
