Weather was the number one issue during today’s practice rounds at the Pro Kart Invitational at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Drivers and teams of the United States Superkart Championship, SKI F125 Enduro Challenge and Big South Road Racing Series were able to run a short 15-minute session in the early hours of the day and were scheduled to hit the track at 3:30pm local time when heavy thunderstorms swept through the area, ending all track action for the day. The third practiced schedule for today was to be the official timed session, and with a closed track, there are no official times available for the day. Tomorrow will be a short day for the teams as an 8:30am practice session will be the only track time available before Sunday morning’s events.

PIT NOTES:
Super Kart Illustrated’s Project 250GP is making its first official race this weekend. After two practice weekends last year, the SKI team of Marc Miller and the new kart owner Jon Anderson are working out the final bugs in attempt to bring home a victory in its first outing. Miller will pilot the ride for this weekend before handing the keys over to Anderson, who will attempt to make his first race weekend at the Putnam Park WKA Road Race Series event in August. Miller was quick in the kart’s debut session and is ready to test the ride against the sport’s top ICE competitors. A complete report on the outing will be included in a future issue of the magazine.

Atlanta’s Marc Croslyn is debuting his new Formula 1 kart this weekend as well. The British-built kart features a Honda RS engine situated on the left side of the driver and it also has some unique components to show off as well, including hand-tunable Hudlett carburetors to help gain horsepower.

Former karter and current professional driver Anthony Lazzaro earned some extra seat time in Tim Richardson’s 125 shifter kart during yesterday’s promoters practice. Richardson told EKN that Lazzaro came in after a few laps with a huge smile on his face.

The third round of the SKI Formula 125 Enduro Challenge is will be running at the same time as the USSC events. Point’s leader Kyle Schreiber will lead the group on Sunday morning in effort to keep his lead on series organizer Brian Wilhelm and ’03 SKI F125 champion Scott Fiesler. Joining the group for the weekend is State-of-Art’s Ken Johnson. The Texan is part of a group of karters that have converted their laydown kart to feature TaG motor. Johnson’s package has other unique features in trying to fit all the components needed to run a Sonik motor, as it has been documented in the forum thread here on EKN.

Nearly 65 125 shifters are on hand and they will provide the Grand Am crowd with a stellar race as well. Some of the top 125 shifter road racing drivers are on hand this weekend, including former SKI Road Racer of the Year Chad Dokken, Lance and Josh Lane, WKA Road Racing regulars Rob Morris, Tim Richardson, Adam Romito and many Big South Series stalwarts.

Former SKI Road Racer of the Year Ted Tackett is also in town to run in the Big South Unlimited class, piloting a new Intrepid powered by a Honda CR250. Tackett tested last weekend at Grattan, where everything ran smoothly. After a 12-hour trek from Kalamazoo, Ted and his father Charlie are looking to have a good time with the Big South karting community. When race-time comes around however, look for the road race star to work his way to the front.
