With the 2004 season well into the rear view mirror and a new year of racing in front of us, the staff at Super Kart Illustrated will be taking the opportunity to look back at the past season when we dole out our annual SKI Awards on the evening of February 26 as part of the KMI Kart Expo festivities at the Pheasant Run Resort and Convention Center in St. Charles, IL. The Kart Expo is the sport’s largest and most important off-season event and the SKI Awards will be an exciting part of the weekend schedule for the second straight year.
“Last year’s event was very well received by everyone involved,” said Tim Blaney, editor of SKI. “Prior to the ’04 edition, we had scheduled the awards to be part of the SKUSA SuperNationals but that caused time issues for the nominated teams and races who were attending the party. By moving to Kart Expo, we have opened up the opportunity for people to relax and fully enjoy the evening.”

The 2004 edition of the SKI Awards will feature six separate categories in driver and team classifications. For the sport’s top competitors, individual honors will be handed out for Driver of the Year, Rising Star, Young Driver of the Year and Road Racer of the Year. The crucial people behind the scenes are by no means left out of the festivities with the prestigious Team of the Year and Tuner of the Year awards also being presented during the program’s big evening. In years past, SKI also awarded their Engine Builder of the Year trophy but the award will no longer be presented.
“The motivation behind the SKI Awards has always been to shine the spotlight on significant achievement, but was never intended to affect the buying decisions of the karting community,” stated SKI publisher Rob Howden. “In recent years, we have become concerned that our decisions were impacting the industry and it is our position that this needs to addressed. While we were proud to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of our sport’s top engine builders, the time is right to discontinue this particular award.”
With the program now just under two months away, it is now time to assemble the five nominees for each award category and as has become tradition, the readers of SKI will be charged with the responsibility of determining these nominees. A downloadable and printable PDF nomination form can be found here and will also be accessible through a banner ad on Ekartingnews and on the homepage of the Super Kart Illustrated website (www.superkartmag.com). The deadline for the arrival of the nomination forms at the SKI Head Office is February 1.
In addition to the nomination form, a reader survey is included in the PDF and SKI readers are asked to complete the survey as well so that the editorial staff can continue to develop the magazine’s content and delivery.
The SKI Awards are set to highlight the Saturday evening of the Kart Expo and for the first time, the program will include dinner as part of the ticket price. There will only be a limited number of tickets available for the evening and they will be sold through either a downloadable order form or via phone from the SKI head office. More information will be released soon.
