Martin wins at Laguna Seca - BRC driver dominates as competition falters

Texan Kyle Martin cruised to an impressive victory in Sunday’s World Superkart Challenge at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, completing what was a virtually flawless weekend. Last year’s ICE 250cc Single winner turned the trick again after overtaking four-time 500cc Grand Prix champion Eddie Lawson early in the race. Lawson had grabbed the lead at the start when he went deep into the turn two braking zone to edge Martin. The BRC PVP driver hung tough, however, and made a move that was identical to the one he laid down in Saturday’s Prefinal, ducking under the motorsports legend heading into Laguna’s left-hand turn five. Martin proceeded to pull away from Lawson until the veteran made a trip to the pit lane when he lost his throttle return spring. Running a 140 mph superkart without full throttle control is not a smart undertaking and Lawson wisely brought the kart into the pits for quick repairs. He returned to the track and eventually finished 13th, one lap down.

Martin takes heat race win to secure pole, Williams tops in ICE

‘Lone Star’ Kyle Martin is showing the way at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend after an exciting Prefinal win over Eddie Lawson to give him the pole position for tomorrow’s World Superkart Challenge main event. Driving for Canadian engine manufacturer Riley Will of BRC Race Engineering, Martin took the lead from Lawson on lap seven after he and BRC teammate Tom Dyer had dogged the four-time 500cc GP motorcycle champion for the opening half of the 12-lap race. Martin proceeded to pull a small margin that he took to the checker, crossing the line with a 1.156-second cushion from Lawson after the MSR pilot turned his quickest lap of the race on the final circuit.

Martin speeds to Laguna Formula E pole, Ingram tops in ICE

The fourth annual World Superkart Challenge has hit the track running with the debut edition of the U.S. Superkart Championship on the line as well. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is the host for the popular festival of speed and the draw of the famed Corkscrew has proven large enough to fill the paddock with competitors from five countries. The glory of both ultimate victory and championship gold is up for grabs this weekend and after, a single morning qualifying session, the drivers hit the track this afternoon (Friday) for their qualifying runs. Race organizers split the field into two groups to provide ample track room for the two categories that run under the U.S Superkart banner – Formula E 250cc twins and the single cylinder Intercontinental E (ICE) cars.
