The 2004 karting season came to a conclusion it grand fashion at Walt Disney World as Alex Speed (Birel) pulled off a dominating win in the ICC class at the Snap-on.com Stars of Karting Presented by the IRL Finale. Speed, who basically flew under the radar all weekend, was blindingly quick when it counted most – in today’s 26-lap Final. Wiegand Wins Thriller in the Grumpy Lot; Miller Scores Surprise ICA Win

Wrapping up an afternoon of wheel-to-wheel racing action at the Stars Finale, the ICC Prefinal was a very exciting dice that kept the paddock and the assembled spectators on the edge of the seats for the entire duration. Kyle Wiegand (GP) grabbed the holeshot to lead polesitter Bobby Wilson (First Kart) to the first turn, pacing the packed field for much of the race. Wilson slipped into second to begin the 18-lap heat race but contact with Wesley Boswell (Birel) early in the run pushed them both back in the order. Wilson was able to continue after dropping out of the top ten and eventually finished sixth while Boswell lost his left sidepod and received the black flag from the starter, taking 28th in the final order.

Wilson and Vorrath Top ICC and ICA After Qualifying

Qualifying is in the books here at Orlando and the ICC session was a wild one with Darren Elliott, last year’s Stars’ Finale winner, running the fastest official time of the weekend in his Maxter-powered CRG. The shifter karting icon will not be starting this afternoon’s Prefinal from the pole however, as he did not come to the event with the necessary three series races on his record, and as a result, he will start tenth. This year, Stars’ officials changed the finale eligibility rules to encourage full series participation. Any driver who participated in fewer than three events could start no better than tenth – thus Elliott’s tenth place.
