Martin takes heat race win to secure pole, Williams tops in ICE

Driving for Canadian engine manufacturer Riley Will of BRC Race Engineering, Martin took the lead from Lawson on lap seven after he and BRC teammate Tom Dyer had dogged the four-time 500cc GP motorcycle champion for the opening half of the 12-lap race. Martin proceeded to pull a small margin that he took to the checker, crossing the line with a 1.156-second cushion from Lawson after the MSR pilot turned his quickest lap of the race on the final circuit.
Dyer faded in the late going but maintained his position in third, which will put him on the inside of row two alongside the third of Will’s BRC ‘dream team’ – Joe White. The Californian is battling serious oversteer that has made his PVP extremely unnerving in many segments of the course, especially the fast left-hand Rainey Curve.
Aussie champion Sam Zavaglia (Stockman) came home fifth ahead of Canadian Kerry Coulson (PVP).
A few expected frontrunners ran in trouble, namely U.S. Superkart Championship point leader JR Osborne (P1) and Aussie Warren McIlveen (Stockman). Osborne suffered a stuck cylinder due to missed jetting and took 27th while McIlveen broke his chain and was forced to replace the part on pit lane, coming home 28th. Midwest hotshoe Johnny West (Stockman) faired a little better, advancing from deep in the grid to 12th at the finish.
ICE polesitter Jim Ingram suffered a shift linkage failure on the opening lap of the Prefinal and dropped to seventh after making repairs in the pits. In his absence from the fight, Anthony Williams (Anderson) and Andy Kiker (Anderson) had an excellent dice with Williams coming out on top to take the class pole for the Sunday final. Brad Davis (PVP) came home in third ahead of Mark Pollard and Paul Band.
We’ll have pit notes and our race predictions online tomorrow morning in our EKN Trackside Championship Sunday Preview.
