EKN Trackside: Rotax Grand National Qualifying
After a long day at X-Plex in Las Vegas, the grids are set for a full day’s heat racing at the 2004 RotaxMax Grand Nationals. It was a clean day of action on the track with only one incident involving a driver in the MiniMax class. He was however, able to return to action in time for his qualifying session.

The biggest class is the International class and after four flights of qualifying with nearly 20 drivers per flight, local driver Sean Gilmartin scored the key pole position for tomorrow’s heat races. He had a solid duel for the pole during the 15-minute open lapping session with Josh Fultz. Gilmartin drew fist blood with lap in the mid-47s on his first flying lap. Reigning Rotax National Champion Jordon Musser was quick posting the second fastest lap early in the session.

Up next to the plate was Zachary Woodsford who placed his kart onto the provision pole with a 47.399. Josh Fultz threw his hat into the ring with a 47.218 but Woodsford was back quickly to the point. Halfway through the session, Fultz was back on top with a 47.058 leading some to question if the 47-second barrier would be broken. By now though the tires had nearly given their best and it seemed unlikely. With one last shot, Gilmartin hung it out and crossed the stripe in 47.057 taking the pole by just .001 seconds. Fultz was second and Musser end up in third.

It was a good session for all the drivers with the top 27 karts all within one second and 65 within two seconds. Things are going to be tight in tomorrow’s heat racing.

In the Master’s class, Jean Valerio was the class of the field posting a pole time of 48.190, nearly two-tenths ahead of Kris Zimmerman. Robby Mott settled the sixth fastest time.

Karl Skerlong and Mike Herda battled in the Rotax Junior class with Skerlong finally winning the pole. His 47.411 was .081 seconds quicker than Herda. The two swapped provisional pole several times during qualifying.

Pacing the RM1 field will be Justin Melton in the class with 18 entries in its first appearance at the Grand Nationals. Court Vernon will lead the way in MiniMax.
