| EKN Trackside Rotax Day 1 |
| |
The action is underway at X-Plex for the 2004 RotaxMax Grand Nationals with a full day’s practice yesterday. Drivers were working hard to dial in the qualifying set-ups as that will be the first test they have to pass to advance.
The International class is the biggie with over 80 entries. A good run in qualifying is vital as only 62 drivers will make it through the heat races to race on Sunday.
With no transponders on the karts, no official times are available and drivers were tight-lipped about who was quick at last night’s driver’s party, so once the timing and scoring system gets fired up, we all might be in for a few surprises.
Of course, no trip to X-Plex would be complete without a visit from the Las Vegas Fire Marshall. If you remember those visits when the SuperNationals were here, things haven’t changed. After repeated requests over the PA system to move cars from the paddock area were ignored, a tow truck arrived and as always, that got the message across loud and clear. No further issues are expected.
The day was capped off with a driver’s party at the Las Vegas Sports Center just south of the airport. SSC Racing, organizers of the race, did a nice job of hosting a fun party where drivers and team were recognized for their efforts throughout the season. Music was provided by Glenn Holland’s band who despite limited practice, sounded good.
The keynote address was delivered by broadcaster and former driver Derek Daly who spoke of what it takes to make it in motorsports. Daly’s talk was frank and excellent, sadly, many of those in the crowd who could have benefited from his words weren’t paying attention.
EKN will be back later with a qualifying report.
