| Karts Supporting Grand Am in Alabama |
| |
For the first time since its construction in 2000, competitive kart racing will hit the asphalt at the immaculate Barber Motorsports Park this weekend. After months of speculation on the envied opportunity, Big South Road Racing Series organizer Robby Harper announced earlier in the year that he had, indeed, landed a support class slot for the Grand American Road Racing Association series visit to the beautiful facility, which is located just outside of Birmingham, Alabama. The 2.3-mile road course is 45’ wide and features 16 turns and 80’ of elevation change.
Amazingly, the time slots for the weekend will include two different race groups for the karts. Group 1 will be composed of the 250cc Superkarts and Unlimiteds, Formula 125, and Sprint 125cc shifters. Group 2 will include 100cc Controlled, Yamaha Sportsman, and Piston Port Can laydowns. Spec 125 Sprint karts have been moved from Group 1 to Group 2 due to the number of karts already in the first grouping. EKN spoke with Harper earlier this week and was informed that drivers are coming from all over North America with competitors trekking in from as far away as California and Eastern Canada. The veteran promoter is overwhelmed with the total number of drivers that pre-entered the race. There are close to 90 drivers on the entry list for the Sprint 125cc shifter class with the other categories averaging about 20-30 entries.
Racers will have three 20-minute practice sessions on Friday along with an early morning practice session on Saturday, which will be used as the qualifying run to line-up each class for Sunday morning’s mains. Group 2 will hit the track first in Sunday with their 30-minute race beginning at 8:00 am while Group 1 will take to the track at 10:00 am for their final. It is hoped that this event is the first many more at the facility. Harper has two events reserved in 2005 with the month of April planned to host the first race.
Super Kart Illustrated Road Racing Reporter David Cole will be on-hand to cover all the action. Look for weekend updates on the Ekartingnews.com Road Racing Forum and a full report on the event in next issue of Super Kart Illustrated. |
