| EKN Turns Four: A Flashback |
| Article by: - by Glenn Holland |
This time of year holds a special place in my heart, as it was four years ago this weekend I drove from Dallas (who knew I'd end up living here) to Norman, Oklahoma, for the SKUSA World Finals as the Ekartingnews (who? What?) correspondent.
I had come up with some crazy idea for a karting website several months before and, paired with my partner in crime and writer extraordinaire, Jeffrey Franz (Brian Stiver would join a few months later), we decided to launch EKN (named by a friend - an entirely different story).
While Jeff held down the fort back in So-Cal, I meekly ventured into the unknown at Norman. As I like to say, we started a karting website knowing next to nothing about two subjects: karting and websites.
The site was barely up, if it was at all, when I arrived Saturday morning. Both Greg Stasko and some hyper Canadian named Rob Howden welcomed me warmly and quickly picked up that I knew no difference between K1 and S1. I still remember stepping into the office in the SKUSA rig only to be assaulted by a cloud of Marlboro by-product courtesy Stasko and The Wizard (I hadn't been behind the curtain yet to meet Jim Murley)!
I vaguely recall very late nights trying to download digital pics and post them as well as hours of head-scratching trying to get results to look halfway decent on the website.
It was one of those experiences that, in looking back, I didn't realize how significantly it would affect my life.
Please follow these two links to see glimpses of the earliest of EKN postings. Instead of entering the info into the more modern EKN content engine, I give you links to what it looked like back when we did it.

So, happy birthday EKN. Much has changed since that mild September weekend in Oklahoma, yet those early days bore fruit by which thousands depend on every day. It's been (mostly) fun being a part of it. |
