The Klein Tools/SKUSA Great Lakes Region shared the weekend of July 10-11 at Grattan Raceway in Belding Michigan in race four of the series. Hosted by the International Racing Association (IRA) and the Championship Enduro Series (CES), SKUSA Great Lakes Region members enjoyed the beautiful weather for a great weekend at the two-mile road course.
Just shy of 50 SKUSA entries helped to enhance the CES weekend event and proved that co-joining series can race together and provide exciting competition. Saturday’s CES 125 race started 48 entries of a combination of CES and SKUSA drivers.
Sunday’s SKUSA Great Lakes event was the fourth of a nine race series sponsored by
Illinois-based KLEIN TOOLS. With Friday practice, many enjoyed the extra setup time to prepare for the weekend event. Saturday was CES’ race program, with SKUSA Great Lakes blending in and running their classes on Saturday and Sunday, SKUSA Great Lakes provided great racing.
Sunday’s 15 minute Alden Engines Novice class had six entries, with Patrick Nirschl of Zionsville, Ind., coming out on top winning his race. Nirschl had the race fast lap of 1:33.403. Following in second place was Brad Greenup, Royce Miller in third, Tyler Spitler in fourth and followed by Gilles Fortier of Ontario, Canada. Kyle Klingleheber finished in sixth.
Race three for the day brought us the Al-a-Kart sponsored 80 Jr class. Winning this class was Corey Dalenburg, of Bellville, Ohio. Winning by only .147 gave this race a lot excitement to watch. Knocking on Dalenburg’s back door was Nick Evans who finished second with the fastest lap of the class with a 1:25.522. In third place was Niles, Michigan and then Nick Hansen, Cap Henry, Joe Ruch, Christopher Eick, followed by Tyler Macleod of Ontario, Canada in fourth through eighth.
Also part of the race three was the CKT Racing Engines / Laps for Kids TAG Senior and TAG Masters class. First in the TAG Senior was Tri Gaffney of White Lake, Michigan, second place was SKUSA rookie Mirrissa Miller of Plainfield, Ind. TAG Master winner was Gary Kannegiesser of Avon Lake, Ohio, with a best lap time of 1:39:667 and Don Tharp finished second.
Race six was the SKUSA 125’s. All 29 of the adult combined classes including the Rapid Racing Enterprise Formula S-1, John’s Kart Shop Formula MX, MRP Motorsports Formula IC and the Jim McCollough Racing
In the MRP Motorsports Formula IC, Ada Michigan’s Chris Kuenning blistered off the fastest lap of the 125 race at 1:21:011, finishing with the win in the 19 lap, 25 minute final. Second was CES hot shoe TJ Koutny, followed by Logan Gomez from Crown Point, Ind., with his MRP Rocket Racing Birel. Logan showed the second fastest lap of the race at 1:21.112. Finishing in fourth was point FIC point leader BJ Anderson. Fifth through ninth went to Plainfield, Indiana’s Miles Miller on his Jim McCollough Racing CRS, GP Chassis, Cale Baily, Justin Mullins, Ohio’s Zach Casto and ninth to Voytek Burdsey of Illinois.
In the John’s Kart Shop Formula MX class, the winner was Justin Rajewski of Auburn Hills, Mich., with a race fast lap of 1:24:207. Second place to points leader Dustin Shriver of South Bend, Ind., and then Case Hooper and Markie McKenzie of Tecumseh, Mich., for fourth and fifth. Webmaster, Bob Monday of Plainfield, IN finished in sixth.
Rapid Racing Enterprises of Clermont, Ind., sponsors the Formula S-1 class. Finishing in first place was CES veteran Clayton Prather of Maryville, Ill., with a fast race lap of 1:21:509. Ben Smith of Brownsburg, Ind., Tom Birchard and Bryan Kupper were second through fourth.
Jim McCollough Racing sponsored Formula G-1 was the biggest class for the region for the weekend with 11 entries making the grid. Finishing first was new SKUSA member Jim Kasprzak, of Deerfield Hills, Mich., followed by Evanston, Ill., based driver and SKUSA veteran Phil Gordon. Harry Alden, who’s been running SKUSA for 11 years, held the fast lap honors for G-1 with a 1:23:971 and finished third. Rookie Al Verbish of Mooresville, Ind., was next in the line up followed by Danny Alden, CES veteran Oscar Navaro, Mark Kupper, Terry Riggins, Rick Keeton of Avon, Ind., Bill Westrick and Chuck Fritz, Jr. to round out the finishing positions.

The next stop of the Klein Tools SKUSA Great Lakes region pro series race will be July 30-Aug 1 at Circleville Raceway Park in Circleville, Ohio. This will be race five and six of the nine race schedule. It is set for a double race weekend event with open practice on Friday and rounds five and six set for Saturday and Sunday.
