 | | Eddie Lawson | On the fifth and final "Kart Summer Nights" at Irwindale Speedway, Ekartingnews.com caught sight of Eddie Lawson wheeling a shifter kart out of his trailer. Given that the motorcycle racing legend was busily preparing his machine for the evening's practice, we fired a few quick questions at Eddie and then let him be.
Ekartingnews.com: Eddie, why are you out here tonight?
Eddie Lawson: Well, I live just down the street, so I thought I'd load up the kart, come out and have a little fun.
EKN: So, only to practice, or will you be racing tomorrow night?
EL: I think we need to get this kart running a bit better, so we'll just be practicing.
EKN: Running better? You were passing everyone out there.
EL: (smiles)
EKN: How long have you been karting?
EL: Let's see. It was the early 90's, right around '92.
EKN: Are you thinking of going to the SKUSA SuperNationals in November, either as a driver or a spectator?
EL: Not likely. Wayne (Rainey) and I have been running the road races, and we enjoy those much more than the sprints. In fact, that's Wayne's dad, Sandy, right over there.
EKN: Paul Newman once said that driving a shifter kart is the most fun a fellow can have with his pants on. Do you agree?
EL: (chuckles) Absolutely. Paul actually drove my kart up at Willow Springs not too long ago. We had a blast.
EKN: A quick motorcycle question: Who's the best rider in the world right now, after yourself, of course?
EL: I don't really follow it too closely. (laughs) If he were still riding, I'd say Evel Knievel. |
