Red Bull Driver Search Announces Open Qualifying Winners

The Red Bull Driver Search announced recently the names of 221 young racers who have potentially made their first step towards a career in Formula 1; these drivers are the winners of Open Qualifying, the first stage of the 2004 Search.

In a significant expansion from last year’s program, a total of 58 go-kart centers nationwide hosted Open Qualifying from March 15 through June 13. Thousands of aspiring racers, between the ages of 13-17, posted lap times at their local go-kart centers, with the four fastest drivers from each location moving forward to the next stage of the program. The next phase of the run-offs will take place in two locations on the following dates:

F1 Outdoors, East Bridgewater, MA – August 3-5
Infineon Raceway, CA - August 23-25

Open Qualifying provided an unparalleled opportunity for young drivers to walk into a go-kart center, and potentially win the support to make it all the way to Formula 1. This program is designed to help the racer with limited funding as well as the “diamond in the rough” lacking the knowledge and contacts to embark on a career in racing.

This select group has earned the opportunity to participate in the Run Offs; two outdoor go-kart events being held on the East and West Coast later this Summer. The participants will be tested and evaluated in Rotax RM-1 SuperKarts by Danny Sullivan and a panel of expert judges. The young racers will be hoping to impress the judges and move forward in the 2004 Search. Ultimately, they are striving for a chance to race in a junior formula in Europe with the Red Bull Junior Team.

The long-term goal of the Red Bull Driver Search is to have a steady group of three to six American drivers racing in Europe, groomed to break into Formula 1 and compete for the World Championship.
