Indoor News: Grand Prix of New York - Winter League Round Four Report

Round four of Grand Prix NY’s adult racing league was held February 12. The league has started running the longer tracks and this night was held on the supertrack configuration running in the normal direction. First up was the GTBB (245lb) class. Cory Rossi has yet to cede pole position in this class, despite running on cold tires in qualifying. Next to Rossi was Dave Harmon and the second row had Adrian Salageanu and Marc Foto. At the drop of the green, Rossi pulled a few kart lengths on Harmon and Salageanu, but by lap five they had reeled him in but were unable to get past him. At the checkered flag a mere two tenths covered the top three. In heat two, Doug Winston was on pole with Peter Perdikogiannis in second. The next row had Bill Strachan and Gary Proft. At the drop of the green, Proft was able to get past the front row and he motored to an easy victory, his first of the season. Behind him, Rossi was trying to repeat his performance of the week before and win from the last starting spot. He was able to get up to second, but had nothing for Proft. Battling for third was rookie Patrick Jamin and Salageanu, and Jamin was able to hold on for the final podium spot.

Next up this evening was GTO (205lb) and this class is proving to be the most competitive this season. Ennis Bragg grabbed his second pole of the season just ahead of Gary Megennis. Row two had Andrew Wood and Tom Caspar. As in the GTBB class, the top four drivers held their positions throughout the race, despite some intense pressure. The second heat had Jim Patton and Fernando Marques up front with Dave Harmon and Brian Maleska in the second row. At the start Marques and Maleska got turned around and that allowed Harmon to get into second followed by a hard charging Chris Johnson. Johnson was quickly into second followed by Tom Caspar and Dimi Vagios. Caspar and Vagios diced for the first 10 laps until Vagios pulled ahead to grab second from Patton. At the end, Johnson reigned with Vagios second and Megennis earning a hard fought third place.

The final group was GTU(175lb). Gary Megennis grabbed his third pole of the season followed closely by Jonathan Lally. The second row had Andrew Wood and Steve Eickelbeck. At the start, LAlly got punted and dropped to fifth, while rookie Nick Frangoulis was able to slip by Eickelbeck for third. This is how they would end up, Megennis notching his third victory of the season to match his poles while Wood and Frangoulis rounded out the podium. Heat two had Mark Nieviarovski and Rob Meggennis on the front row and Will and Mark Eickelbeck behind them. Megennis, Jr quickly grabbed a lead he would not relinquish followed by Mark Eickelbeck and a hard charging Jonathan Lally, up from his ninth starting position. This is how they would end the evening.
