Industry News: Host of Drivers Test for Phil Giebler Racing/PR1 Driver Development Program

The Phil Giebler Racing/PR1 Motorsports driver development program made its debut with teenagers Carter Williams, Dakota Dickerson, Mason Daughters and Mianna Wick testing a Mygale-Honda Fit 1600cc at Buttonwillow (Calif.) Raceway Park on Jan. 3.

“All the PGR drivers did extremely well for their first time driving a formula car,” Giebler said. “They adapted very well and learned very quickly. I was impressed how they got up to speed and how they made adjustments.”

Giebler and PR1 owner Bobby Oergel provided instructions for Williams, a 15-year-old from Clovis, Calif., Dakota Dickerson, a 16-year-old from San Diego, Daughters, a 15-year-old from Polo, Mo., and Mianna Wick, a 16-year-old from Grand Junction, Colo. They are all experienced karters.

“I thought I had a great run for my very first time in any type of car,” Williams said. “The Formula F 1600 was a blast to drive. In many ways, it felt like my shifter kart, but a lot faster down the straights and a little slower in the corners. It was definitely fun to drive. Phil Giebler and Bobby Oergel and the guys from PR1 were awesome.

“After I was fit for the seat and went over the controls in the cockpit, they took me out on the track in a passenger car to show me the line and what gears to be in. That really gave me a lot of confidence when I took to the track. I am really looking forward to my next opportunity to test the Formula F 1600.”

It was also exciting for Dickerson.

“It was a very memorable moment in my life,” he said. “Not only was it extremely fun, but it was a great learning experience. With the help of Bobby, Phil and the guys from PR1, I now have a better understanding of not only the difficulties, but also he amazing feeling of driving a race car. With their help throughout the day, giving me tips and encouragement, I believe that I got increasingly better and I felt more comfortable with the car with each session I would quickly welcome another chance to drive the PR1 Formula Fit again and sincerely hope that I will be seeing them at the race track soon.”

Giebler and Oergel brought together their championship-winning teams to create a path for karters to move into formula cars.

“We’re looking forward to doing some full test days and I am sure they are extremely anxious to get back behind the wheel of the Honda FF car,” Giebler said.

Phil Giebler Racing is based in Anaheim, Calif., and uses Fernando Alonso and Tony Karts. Giebler is a resident of Huntington Beach, Calif. Oergel’s PR1 is based in Fresno, Calif.
