| Industry News: Cameron Racing to Form Junior Race Teams |
| |
Cameron Racing announces that it will be undertaking the development of two new Junior Racing programs in addition to its current Grand-Am and Pro-Mazda operations. Owner Steve Cameron commented "With the growth of our Karting Series it's become apparent that there is a need for teams to offer young drivers a path to move into race cars." Cameron added "after looking at all the options we have determined that the Pacific Formula F Series and the GRC "Superlite" series offer the best opportunities."
Steve Cameron has a long history of developing drivers in the Junior Formula series, having worked with Indy 500 winners Buddy Rice and Sam Hornish; IndyCar drivers Memo Gidley, Patrick Carpentier and Alex Barron; and sport car stars Michael Valiante, Dane Cameron, Bryon Sellers and many more professional drivers.
Formula F Series
The Pacific Formula F Championship is a West Coast based series with six events, each having two races, that allows drivers as young as thirteen to compete. The Formula F cars are now powered by the Honda Fit engine with Honda offering support to the series and competitors. The Pacific series has produced many drivers that have moved onto professional careers, a recent notable is JR Hildebrand.
Formula F cars are the perfect car for karters to transition into. They rely more on driver skill than on engineering, yet offer all the essential tuning items that a driver must learn to optimize.
Cameron Racing will offer full race support for drivers in the Pacific Formula F series by providing sales, service and track support for Formula F cars.
GRC "Superlite" Series
The GRC "Superlite" car is designed to give young drivers an opportunity to learn the skills to compete in The Global Rally Cross series in the incredibly fast GRC Supercars.
The GRC series features events at the X-Games and selected NASCAR and IndyCar events, with drivers like Ken Block, Tanner Foust and Travis Pastrana. The GRC will add the "Superlites" car to selected races during the year as means to help drivers learn the skill needed to transition into the Super cars and develop sponsor opportunities. The Superlite cars are built by OMSE and all the regulations on the cars will be closely controlled to ensure that there is equality in the equipment. It is anticipated that there will be 5 to 6 races and 15 to 20 cars competing.
Cameron Racing attended the US debut of the car and is working to develop the program. Sanzaru NorCal Rotax Junior Champion Alex Keyes will get a chance to drive the car in January.
