Indoor News: Grand Prix New York - Fall Adult League Round 3 Report

Tuesday, October 2nd Mt Kisco’s Grand Prix NY held the third round of its Fall Adult Racing season. This evening was run on the tightest of the track configurations and a premium was placed on a good qualifying effort. First up this evening was the GTBB (245lb) group and while a number of racers could not make it in time due to severe weather in the area, there was some great racing in this group. In qualifying Cory Rossi continued his dominance and set the bar with a time of 21.092. Second was Adrian Salageanu (21.465) who was only two hundredths faster the Dave Harmon (21.484). At the drop of the green, Rossi and Salageanu checked out and ran nose to tail to take the win and second respectively. Harmon had his hands full holding off Gary Proft and Bill Strachan and wound up surrendering third to Strachan who pulled a text book move in the last turn of the last lap. With the field inverted for heat two, Sam Viera and Marc Foto started on the front row. In the first turn, Harmon turned Strachan around and the two of them dropped to the back while Rossi and Salageanu picked up where they left off and were soon at the point. Battling back up through the field, Harmon, Proft and Strachan once again found themselves dicing on this very tight track. At the end, Harmon was able to prevail to take third, only inches ahead of Proft who was trying to hold off Strachan.

The next group up this evening was GTU (175lbs). In qualifying, Steve Eickelbeck grabbed pole over Andrew Wood with a time of 20.751. At the start of the race, Mark Eickelbeck was able to get by Wood, but gave the position back on lap seven. The heat ended with Steve Eickelbeck winning, Wood second and Mark Eickelbeck third. Heat two once again inverted qualifying and this put Gene Thyer on pole with Anthony Mujica next to him. Thyer was able to make the best out of a bad qualifying session and lead the race from the drop of the green to take his first victory of the season. Mujica held on for second while Brian Castellano was able to make his way up through the field to grab the final podium position.

The last group this evening was GTO (205lbs). Tom Caspar grabbed pole with a time of 20.908 while Gary Megennis pipped Ennis Bragg by four hundredths to get second. AT the drop of the green the front of the field took off while behind them Andrew Wood continued a streak of bad luck and got turned around on the first lap dropping him from fourth on the grid to sixth. At the end, Caspar prevailed over Megennis and Bragg to take his second victory of the season. In heat two, Kenton Gomez was on point with Brian Maleska and the second row had Fernando Marques and Chris Johnson. Maleska was quickly passed by Marques and Johnson at the start and the two of them soon chased down Gomez. Johnson got by Marques on lap eight and was by Gomez for the lead on lap fifteen. Gomez was able to hold off a hard charging Bragg who moved up from his seventh starting position to grab another third place.
