Team News: Buddy Rice Karting - Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix Report

Buddy Rice Karting's (BRK) Matt Johnson locked up the Pro Kart Challenge California TAG championship at the Lancaster Grand Prix. A great drive by Travis Lowe in the final earned him 2nd place overall in the points classification. Christian Brooks came away in 2nd place overall in the Pro Kart Challenge TAG Junior championships after finishing 5th in Lancaster.

TAG Senior was all about team BRK with Energy driver Johnson quickest in practice and set to secure the pole position. After bolting on a new set of tires Johnson indeed stayed on top in qualifying running an impressive 43.435 around the bumpy and technical Lancaster circuit. With Johnson starting from P1, the rest of the BRK team was scattered throughout the field and would play a part in the outcome of the final on Sunday. Alejo Fernandez qualified 6th, Travis Lowe 9th, John Wallace III 14th and Alex Kirby sat 17th to start heat one. Heat win #1 went to Johnson as did heat #2. Lowe picked up a few positions in heat two and started a few rows back from Johnson in the final. Johnson slipped into 2nd place to begin the 20 lap final, but six laps in he was back out front. Lowe too was in the hunt for the win as two BRK drivers ran in the lead group of four. Contact halfway through left the BRK duo alone and out front of their competitors. The teammates gave no quarter on the final lap, trading paint on the way to the checkered flag. Johnson brought it home for the win, with Lowe making it a 1-2 on the podium and 1-2 in the championship. Wallace too had a fantastic main event, starting 19th he stormed through the field to capture a great 5th place finish.

The BRK Junior Energy drivers kicked thing off with Nathan Seegrist qualifying in 3rd place. Christian Brooks was 8th quick, Justice Lepe 13th and Phillipe Denes started the heats from 15th. Brooks had the setup down in the heat races moving up into the top 3. Lepe and Denes also moved forward, but a little bad luck for Seegrist saw him lose a few positions. The final saw Brooks hunting early for the win, but contact in the lead group dropped him back in the latter stages of the race. He fought hard for his 5th place finish, securing himself 2nd place in the championship for the year. Lepe finished in 9th, Seegrist was 12th and Denes came away 14th for BRK Energy.

Dante Yu was the sole BRK Energy driver in TAG Cadet. He qualified mid pack and finished both heats just outside the top five. The main event didn't go as planned as a mechanical ended Yu's race early.
