The 2012 Rock Island Grand Prix was a year of firsts for a number of drivers over the Labor Day weekend. The city streets of Rock Island, Illinois hosted karters from all over North America to contest in the largest street race in the world. After battling wet weather on Saturday for practice and qualifying, Sunday brought on warm and dry conditions for the main events. Nine drivers conquered the Rock for the first time - including Mason Chelootz and Connor Lund earning two each. The fan-favorite King of the Streets event saw 2009 winner Jordon Musser earn his second career crown with a dominant performance.

The opening day of the 2012 Rock Island Grand Prix experienced wet conditions for most of the day through practice and qualifying around the streets of the Quad Cities District area. Rain moved up from the south, courtesy of Tropical Storm Isaac and hit the area just near the halfway point of the opening round of practice. From then on, it was rain tires. The system cleared as qualifying wrapped up, however the back section was still wet enough for rains. Many of the categories on the day welcomed first-time pole position awards, including King of the Streets.

It’s time…come 5pm CDT in Rock Island, Illinois, the streets of the Quad Cities area next to the popular District section of the city will become a race course once again. Every year, racers from around the country converge on Labor Day weekend for the annual running of the Rock Island Grand Prix. The world’s largest street race will see 15 categories competing for cash and prizes over the two-day event.
