Tony Kart driver Jesse Lazare was determined to have a good performance at round 3 of the ECKC last weekend at ICAR and he came very, very close to having a ‘perfect’ weekend.
“After Saturday’s event (a non-ECKC event) we knew we were fast, so I was really looking forward to Sunday,” Lazare said.
Sunday got off to a good start when the 15-year-old from Dollard des Ormeaux took the pole for the Rotax Senior class. “We were good in qualifying, but I still thought there was some time left in the Tony Kart, so Steve [Chapman] worked hard to get the most out of it for the pre-final and final.”
Lazare won the pre-final, then altered his strategy going into the final. “We thought the best idea was to set up the kart to come in early and try to build a lead. If this worked, I was hoping to get a big enough lead that I couldn’t be caught.”
The plan worked perfectly for the start of the race, as Lazare led the majority of the race. “I knew I was in trouble in the late stages of the race as my rear tires were done,” Lazare said. “I fought as hard as I could but I just wasn’t able to hang on.”
Lazare had to settle for the second step on the podium, but the finish kept him in the championship hunt heading into this weekend’s races at Mosport International Karting Complex.
“We need to have a good performance at Mosport to keep moving up in the championship standings,” Lazare added.
