‘Become One: A Karting Documentary’ Secures Funding for Production

In less than one month, the dream of a new karting film has moved one step closer to reality thanks to the kindness and generosity of the karting community and industry. ‘Become One: A Karting Documentary’ and Shofner Films raised over $40,000 through their Kickstarter program in order to begin production of the new and innovative documentary of the sport of karting. Developed by the artistic mind of John Shofner of Shofner Films, this young film maker is bound to make a quality product that will make karting in North America proud and possible help spear a growth in the community.

The past few weeks, Shofner has been busy making contacts with industry and community members to line up some quality names behind the project. Shofner is working with Superkarts! USA, DRT Racing, MG Tires, Brett King Design, Eyenovation Multimedia, ONE Racegear, Oktane Visual, DB Motorsports, GO Designs, KartLift, and many others - in addition to a number of club, regional, national and even international racers - to help raise the necessary funds to get the film off the drawing boards and into reality. Now begins the production stage of the film with Shofner mapping out that stage of the film’s progression.

EKN contacted John following the confirmation of the Kickstarter program fulfilled its goal. “Relief, excitement, nervousness, a lot of things, but mostly appreciative,” commented John when asked how he felt to have reached the goal. “It would have been very disappointing to have not made it. $40,000 is a lot of money to rise for this, but a mere 239 people managed it for the whole of the community. If you would have asked me to get 240 people to help me make this happen in the beginning I don't know that I would have thought it possible. I can’t thank those people enough. What they as a relatively small group, in the scheme of things, have done is nothing short of remarkable.”

Now that the $40,000 goal has been reach, does not stop the need to further add to the production budget. Shofner said pledges will still continue to be accepted for the life of the project, just not through the Kickstarter program as they are working on a payment solution at the moment. While the film is in production, added funds will help to purchase better equipment, allow for improved production standards, and if enough comes in, a type of distribution program for the film.

The remaining packages on Kickstarter may still be available. Shofner has not discussed with the donating sponsors as of yet, but he believes that they may still honor the products offered. There still are 40 sets of MG Tires available, however, he is not sure how long they will be available for purchase to support the film.

Now that the project is funded, Shofner is hard at work preparing for the leg work. “Next steps right now are to get working on honoring the pledges. Amazon.com holds the funds for 14 days before it is available to me to spend. In that time we are working on getting pledge offers lined up as best as possible. Soon after, I am jumping into talks and contracts with music licensing. Then planning with the rental companies to make sure all equipment shows up on time and ready to go. That’s putting it extremely simple though, and just the tip of the ice burg. Ideas with the team and working with Chris (Ortenburger) on all the graphics also happens.”

The first stop on the production schedule will be the upcoming Texas ProKart Challenge in Denton, Texas. Thanks to Shofner’s location, the trip is in his backyard and will provide him to add a fifth event to the production. The film is currently budgeted for four events - Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SummerNationals, Rock Island Grand Prix, SKUSA Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix, and Las Vegas for the SKUSA SuperNationals XVI.
