Current Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) Pro Tour S2 Semi-Pro championship leader Sabré Cook has her regional record moving in the right direction. In a four week span, the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge hosted two events, contesting the first four rounds of the six-round championship series. Cook, aboard her CRG-USA entry, showed speed and consistency both weekends to place herself at the top of the championship standings. The now 18-year old is quickly becoming one of the top shifterkart drivers in the United States.

The series opened up at Cook’s home track, the Grand Junction Motor Speedway in Grand Junction, Colorado on May 5-6. Cook began round one with the second quickest lap in-class for qualifying, fourth overall with the S1 Pro class on-track at the same time. She held the second spot through the opening 12-lap heat race, despite a slow start. The second heat race saw contact between her and the leader in the opening lap, putting both on the sidelines, and at the back of the field for the start of the feature. Cook would fight back to finish third in class, with lap times similar to that of the leaders. The next day saw Cook nearly edging out all the drivers for the overall pole position. Just 38-thousandths kept her out of the P1 spot overall, but gained her 10 bonus points for fast lap in class for the qualifying session. Cook would race her way to the front however in heat one, leading the entire race group to the checkered flag. Trouble struck in heat two as a mechanical issue force her to retire while leading. Starting from the back in the main event once again, Sabré was on a mission to the front. Lap by lap, she gained a position closer to the lead. Once solidly into the lead in class, she kept pace with the S1 leaders to finish fourth overall, earning the fast lap honors in the S2 category.

“It was great to get my first win of the season under my belt,” commented Cook. “We were close at the SKUSA Pro Tour opener, even winning a heat race, but the checkered flag after a main event is what we strive for. We showed great speed all weekend and put ourselves in the hunt for the title, which is the most important piece.”

The latest event was held June 2-3 at the Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah - the site of the 2012 SKUSA Pro Tour SummerNationals in July. With a solid weekend of results, she was able to climb into the series championship lead. The weekend began with Cook at the top of the time charts for round three, qualifying P1 in S2 and third overall with the S1 group included. She ended up just two-tenths off the top two S1 drivers in the country while out-pacing her competition by two tenths. A tad slow off the grid to open heat one, she lost a few positions. Running second in class after the opening lap, she regained the spot and went on to win the 10-lap moto. Another fault at the starting line put down to fourth at the start of heat two. She would battle back to finish second with the fast lap in class. A better start put her third for the opening lap of the feature. Fast laps once again help her drive to a runner-up finish, just six-tenths behind the race winner. Trying a different set-up for round four on Sunday, Cook ended the qualifying session in fourth. Heat one was a great battle that saw Sabré finish up fourth. Another solid 10-lap fight for the win in heat two ended with Cook in the third position and fast lap honors. The 18-lap feature race was a three driver battle with Cook in the mix. All running similar lap times, Cook would cross the line in third place for a second podium finish of the weekend.

“It was a great test to see where we are for the Pro Tour weekend next month,” Cook continued. “I was able to drive to podium finishes both days against the same competition that I’ll see next month, while moving into the championship lead for the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge series. Things are moving in the positive direction for us and I’m really looking forward to the coming weeks as we get ready for the SKUSA SummerNationals.”

During that time, Cook also celebrated one of life’s celebrations as she graduated from the Fruita Monument High School. She ended her high school career with a 4.1 GPA and is enrolled for at one of the best engineering schools in the country - the Colorado School of Mines. Starting in August, she will begin studying for a Mechanical and Chemical Engineer degree with studies to also include engineering physics and business. Sabré will continue on with her 2012 schedule with the SKUSA SummerNationals at the Miller Motorsports Park on July 20-22. Cook would like to thank her racing support program; CRG-USA, Grand Junction Motor Speedway, MG Tires, Zamp Helmets, Xtreme Colors Helmet Painting, Alpine Bank, Gold’s Gym, JH Precision Machine, Enstrom’s Candies.
