Continuing to complete the necessary races to have the opportunity to compete at the United States Rotax Grand Nationals, Alex and Mikey Hornborg were back on track this past weekend at the penultimate round of the North Florida Rotax Max Challenge (NFRMC) event in Ocala, Florida. Taking place at Ocala Gran Prix (OGP), the Hornborg duo would overcome challenging and changing weather conditions throughout the event to garner solid results and build momentum towards the second half of the season.
"It was a very tricky day," expressed Alex Hornborg. "We had rain in the morning and then we went to a dry setup for qualifying and the heat race before the major downpour came. Back to wet conditions for the main event, it was definitely a challenge."
Younger brother Mikey added, "The amount of rain we had in the afternoon was unbelievable. I was happy to keep it on the track and come home with a top five result."
While Alex would do battle in the Rotax Junior field, Mike would see action in the competitive Rotax Mini Max category and after qualifying just inside the top ten, he would greatly improve throughout the day. Claiming another top ten result in the prefinal, Mikey took to the challenging wet weather conditions in the main event and marched his way forward. Keeping all four wheels on the track while some of his competitors had issues, the youngest of the Hornborgs would claim a fifth place finish, one of his best results in his injury-plagued 2012 racing program.
A stacked field of Rotax Junior drivers would put Alex Hornborg amongst several national level front runners as past Florida Winter Tour as well as World Karting Association champions would enter the race. Showing speed in Friday's unofficial test day, Alex turned that speed into an excellent qualifying effort, as he would line his Tony Kart up inside the top five. Holding station for the heat race, Alex would look to have a chance at the race win later that day.
With a delay due to severe weather, competitors would switch back to Mojo rain tires for the main event. With a starting position close to the front of the field, Alex would look to avoid the first corner carnage and be there at the end. When the rain had finally stopped and the checkered flag had flown, Alex would cross the stripe in the seventh position.
Alex and Mikey Hornborg will now travel to Jacksonville, Florida for the final round in the Florida Karting Championship Series (FKCS) on June 22 - 24, 2012. Looking to finish on the series strong, both Hornborgs will be fighting tooth and nail for race wins and podium results.
