| Driver News: Hunter Kelly - California ProKart Challenge Adams Preview |
| |
NorCal driver Hunter Kelly decided to make the trip to Phoenix, Az. for the 2012 Spring Nationals. Things started out really well for the young driver on Friday with the test and tune portion of the weekend. Lap times were good and he got progressively faster as the day went on. Saturday proved to be a little more difficult. After reviewing the morning warm up laps with his tuner Daniel Moffet the data indicated there was a problem. By qualifying the problem was still not resolved and the times just weren’t there for the young driver placing him 10th for the 1st heat race. With the problem still looming in the 1st heat and being involved in an accident in turn 1 Hunter was only able to secure the 9th starting position. Further troubleshooting identified the problem to be a broken wire in the wiring harness. As the flag dropped for heat 2 it was obvious that the problem had been corrected. Hunter charged his way up through the pack to gain control of the lead until the white flag dropped, after a hard fought battle Hunter was able to secure a 2nd place finish. The Main event was an epic battle between the top five drivers with an unprecedented number of lead changes. Battling all the way to the finish line Hunter would end the day by securing the second spot on the podium.
Sunday was another exciting day. Hunter qualified off pole with a difference of .027 of a second just missing the top spot. In the first heat the top three drivers battled intensely for the lead. Kelly would finish the 1st heat race 3rd placing him on the inside row for the 2nd heat. Hunter again battled with the other competitors for the top spot, however attempting a pass in turn11, he got caught up with another kart and fell to the 9th position at the wave of the checkered flag.
The Main was a race no one will soon forget. Hunter started in the 9th position. As the green flag dropped for the start of the main event Hunter drove like he was on a mission. He flew down the track making unbelievable passes to the front of the pack to battle yet again for the top spot. Hunter used his head and waited until the last lap to pass for the lead holding off the opposing driver all the way to the checkered flags. He also achieved the fastest lap in the Main with a time of 51.048 being 0.300 faster than any other competitor in the main event.
The young driver is getting ready for the next ProKart Challenge race in Adams, as well as, the rest of the Challenge races and hopefully the Trip to Utah for the remaining Pro Tour Races. Hunter has had a lot of support from his sponsors and family. Hunter would like to Thank Danny Bordogna for the Awesome motors and Tecno chassis, Action Machine & Welding for their sponsorship (Brad Buckman), All Staff Consulting, Hart & Huntington, Six Feet Deep, & GoPro. As well as his tuner Daniel Moffet for all of his help, Bob, Clayton & Anthony Snow, all his friends and family for supporting him as well as all of his fellow competitors for a great race weekend. |
