| eKartingNews.com Driver Rankings – May 14, 2012 – Stock Moto |
| |
eKartingNews.com is happy to publish the newest edition of the 2012 EKN Driver Rankings for Stock Moto. The new season is proving to be a year of transition as a number of S2 drivers from a year ago have moved into the S1 category for good. With these graduations, and the revolving 12-month stats of the EKN standings, the top spot will very likely see some new and different names in the #1 position throughout the year. This month, a new young pilot finds himself on top as the #1 ranked driver in the nation, and he is Colorado driver and new S1 pilot Cory Milne.
Riding on the strength his two-win S2 performance at last year’s SummerNationals in his home state, Milne (GP) has overtaken Nicky Freytag for the #1 spot in the EKN Driver Rankings for Stock Moto. Milne made his S1 debut at the opening round of the California ProKart Challenge, placing second. His Pro Tour debut did not go quite as he hoped, which could cost him the number one spot after this year’s SummerNationals. Despite gaining a few points at the SpringNationals, as well as moving up to the S1 category this year, Freytag (FA Kart) falls to second place in the rankings. 2011 S2 Pro Tour champion Kyle Hathcox (GP) gained 50 points to move up to third in the order this month. With the best overall weekend of the S2 graduates at the SpringNationals, Jake French (Birel) moved up one position to fourth. Capping off a young top-five is S1 sophomore Lukas Johnson (Exprit), who did not replicate his two-podium effort in his SpringNats from a year ago, but still ran strong.
Thanks to the increase in numbers in the S1 category, defending California ProKart Challenge S1 champion Brad Dunford (GP) added to his point total to sit sixth this month. Finishing the weekend outside the top-10 at the SpringNationals, Dunford can increase his points more with a strong performance in the event leading up to the next Pro Tour outing. Jumping into the top-10 and sitting seventh is S1 rookie Joey Wimsett (CRG). With a victory in his Pro Tour debut, followed by a runner-up to 2010 champion Fritz Leesmann on Sunday, Wimsett could add his name to the short list of drivers who have topped both TaG and Stock Moto rankings. Clinton Schoombee fell two spots to eighth with fellow DR Kart racer Josh Lane returned to the top-10 in ninth. Dropping one spot to tenth is Connor Wagner (Formula K), who did not have the Pro Tour outing he wished for, but gained two podium finishes at the Texas ProKart Challenge opener to hold the title of highest ranked S2 driver on the list.
Two of the top three drivers from the Pro Tour S1 standings are further down in the order. Kiwi and defending champion Daniel Bray (GP) only has five events counted toward the driver rankings (all Pro Tour events). Missing the important sixth event result keeps him down in the 30th position, up two spots from last month’s rankings. It would be great to see Bray taken in a regional so that he would have enough races to properly position himself in the order. It's just part of the rankings calculation, as we have to set a minimum number of races to come up with the listing, and to us, five races is simply not enough when you consider how many Stock Moto events are being run each year. Current SKUSA Pro Tour S1 point leader Fritz Leesmann (CRG) was absent from the SummerNationals last year and is a tuner during the regional events, so he too, lacks the necessary number of total races. Fritz's SuperNationals result and SpringNats effort have him 67th, with just three races in the end calculation.
Coming tomorrow will be the release of the new TaG Driver Rankings.

NEW Stock Moto #1 - Cory Milne
Arvada, Colorado

Aluminos driver Cory Milne can celebrate this month’s EKN Driver Rankings as he tops the standings for the first time in his career. The S2 vice-champion came on strong at the end of 2011, helping to put him in the #1 position for the rankings this month. After making a strong S1 debut at the California PKC event, his first Pro Tour outing was not as promising with two finishes outside the top-10. The determined young 19-year old will be gunning for a stronger performance at the SummerNationals, otherwise, expect him to drop slightly down the order after the July event in Utah.

While he technically is a rookie this season, Oregon driver Joey Wimsett is no stranger to big-time racing. A racer in TaG and KF2 categories previously on the top-level, the CRG America pilot made his S1 debut last winter at the SKUSA SuperNationals with a podium finish. He backed it up this April with a debut victory on the Pro Tour, followed up with a runner-up finish. Working under the Rolison Performance Group tent this season, Wimsett is more-focused then ever and is a championship contender this season. With only three national events to his credit, its certain Wimsett will continue to climb up the ranks and possibly into the #1 position pending his SummerNationals results.

EKN Driver Rankings Calculation Process
The EKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in major North American races. Assembled using events from the previous 12 months from the current date, we use a driver’s best seven finishes in TaG and six in Stock Moto to determine their overall current point total. With each new release, results posted from more than one year ago are discarded. To deliver our ranking list, we tabulate the results of all the national programs and selected regional programs. We have included the results for the major one-off events such as the SKUSA SuperNationals, the US Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals, the Rock Island Grand Prix and the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix.
Each race is initially weighted based on the prestige and history of the event or series with a score of ten (10) being the highest attainable base ranking. For 2012, the SKUSA SuperNationals and US Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals receive a score of 10 in their initial weighting in the TaG category while the SuperNationals is the lone event in the Stock Moto division. The SKUSA Pro Tour series events draw a base ranking of nine (9), while the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup, Florida Winter Tour, Challenge of the Americas, IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals, Rotax Pan American Challenge and other regional program races were given a base ranking of either eight (8) or nine (9).
The EKN staff reserves the right to adjust the rankings of each event throughout the year. A minimum entry total for any events considered for the Driver Rankings program is five (5). If an event does not have at least five (5) drivers starting the race, those results will not be tabulated toward the Driver Rankings.
Added to these initial rankings are two variables that help confirm the true importance of an event to the ranking process – field size and field strength. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, while the number of existing top 50 drivers entered offers another full point or fraction of a point. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race. Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best seven races in TaG, six for Stock Moto, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.
