Storms and blustery winds couldn’t stop the Indy Karting Series as it opened its 2012 RFR Cars season with the Jackson Oil & Solvents Grand Prix at New Castle (IN) Motorsports Park. Chase Jones (Greenwood, IN) led the way for the weekend with two victories in different classes.

Jones led the whole way to take the ten-lap Rotax Junior class finale over Drake Woodward, Jon Giddens, and Abby McLaughlin. Jones was fast qualifier in both the Rotax and TaG Junior classes while also winning the Rotax Junior pre-finale. When technical issues sidelined his regular ride after that, Jones took over Mike Richey’s mount to post an exciting 0.651-second TaG Lite/TaG Junior victory over TaG Heavy winner Colton Aldrich and early race-leader Austin Queen. Aldrich finished second with Queen, Andrew Lewis, Giddens, and Woodward following. Woodward won the TaG Junior pre-finale while Queen was the fast qualifier and pre-finale winner for TaG Lite. Giddens took the TaG Junior pre-finale.

Aldrich posted a 3.062-second victory over Queen, Jones, Lewis, Richey, and Christian Ross in TaG Heavy. Aldrich was quickest in qualifications while Queen took the pre-finale.

Drew Lindley led the entire way in Rotax Micro/Mini action, taking the victory over Jack W. Miller, Carson Steel, and younger brother Aiden Lindley. Drew Lindley also was the class fast qualifier and pre-finale winner.

Jason Wicker battled Chris Hammock in the Clone Lite/Heavy class, finally edging Hammock by 0.119 seconds, with Justin Wicker third, Brandon Lewis fourth, and Joe King fifth. Jason Wicker, the class fast qualifier, led the first four laps before Hammock took the point for three laps, regaining the lead with two laps to go. Hammock won the pre-finale.

Jack W. Miller ran away from the rest of his Yamaha Junior Sportsman competitors to take that class, although J.J. Conway actually led the first lap before a broken steering shaft put him out of the race. Aden Gray, Carson Steele, Andrew Bische, and Kendall Hedge rounded out the top five. Conway was a DNF in sixth. Miller also won the pre-finale and topped qualifications.

Davis Durrett dominated the Yamaha Junior Supercan class with a clean sweep for the weekend, with a three-way battle for second providing the fireworks for the class. Jon Giddens and Daniel Pearcy bump-drafted past Abby McLaughlin on the last lap to finish second and third with McLaughlin taking fourth. Chandler Horton was a DNF in fifth.

Jackson Mears slid by Blake Deister with two laps to go and hung on for a 0.215-second victory over Deister in Yamaha Heavy. Gary Monnett and Giacomo Gobbi-Belcredi was a distant third and fourth. Deister won the pre-finale.

Deister returned the favor to Mears, winning comfortably in Yamaha Masters/Medium with Mears, Dustin Vogt, Monnett, Levon Bates, and Trenton Bryant rounding out the top six. Deister was fast qualifier and won the pre-finale.

Sammy Hinds thoroughly dominated the Kid Kart class, winning by a full lap over Elizabeth Gray, Dakota Long, Connor Hedge, and Carter Mears. Hinds also topped qualifying.

Next up for the IKS RFR Series karts is the sixth annual Seymour (IN) Grand Prix June 30-July 1 on the streets of the southern-Indiana city.
