Coming off a top-five performance at the CIK-FIA European KF3 opening round, New York racer Santino Ferrucci rode the momentum into the second round of the WSK Euro Series. The 1.28-km course of Val D’Argenton International Circuit in western France on May 3-6, hosted the KZ1, KZ2, KF2 and KF3 categories of the series. Leading the way for the six North American drivers competing on the weekend was Ferrucci, scoring a fourth place finish in the KF3 class to move him into the top-10 of the championship fight.

The event began with Ferrucci sitting mid-pack after qualifying, classified 34th. With a best finish of seventh and worst of 19th in the four heat races, he only gained a few positions in the overall standings to sit 29th before the Prefinals. Starting on row eight in Prefinal A, Ferrucci was among the quickest drivers on track as he piloted his Energy Corse entry to an impressive fourth place finish in 16 laps. The result put him on inside row four for the main event. Once again staying out of trouble and among the quicker drivers in the field, Ferrucci drove his Energy/TM package to a fourth place finish, his best in WSK action. His results moved him into the top-10 in the championship standings, sitting ninth and holding the privilege of the top North American driver thus far.

Canadian Lance Stroll looked to have a solid weekend going. Qualifying into the SuperPole session, he was seventh of the top-12 drivers. Two heat wins with finishes of second and fourth put the Chiesa Corse driver second overall in the classifications and on the pole position for Prefinal B. Issues in the opening laps forced Stroll to retire, placing 24th after just two laps recorded and unable to transfer to the Final.

Florida driver Dalton Sargeant and Canadian Zachary Claman DeMelo also missed the KF3 main event on the weekend after tough events for both. Sargeant qualified 22nd, recorded two solid heat finishes, but two poor results dropped him down to 27th prior to the Prefinals. While he had the speed similar to the front runners, Sargeant was unable to advance his Ward Racing Tony Kart/Vortex entry into a transfer position, ending up 21st. The same went for DeMelo. Qualifying 37th, he was 31st after the heat races with par results in all four runs. Starting Prefinal A alongside Ferrucci, DeMelo was unable to match his performance, placing 18th and out of a transfer position.

Canadian Phillip Orcic entered the weekend as the point leader in the KZ2 category, but a tough three days of competition dropped him down the championship standings. Orcic was sixth in qualifying, running third in the opening heat, but was excluded in heat two (reason unknown) along with another driver. This placed him 10th on the grid for the opening Final, where he placed 13th in a wet-weather event. Starting the second round of event from where he finished round one, Orcic drove his CRG Holland entry to results of seventh and ninth to start the second main event from P7. Another tough main event saw Orcic place 12th, the last kart running on the lead lap. Orcic now sits tied for third in the championship, 14 points out of first.

Florida driver and former EKN 2010 Driver of the Year Daniel Formal made his European debut with Ward Racing in the KZ2 division. Qualifying 12th for round one, he drove his way forward in the heat races to finishes of ninth and sixth to start P7 in the main event. Advancing up to third in a wet-race, Formal’s Vortex engine sucked in too much water and the engine seized on lap seven, ending his first WSK main event. Unable to advance forward in the second round of heat races, Formal started Final 2 from P12 and advanced up to eighth in the 20-lap event to cap off his European debut.

The WSK Euro Series will continue on June 21-24 at the famous La Conca International Circuit in Muro Leccese, Italy.
