It was another weekend of wheel-to-wheel action for Alex and Mikey Hornborg as the duo traveled to the tight and twisty Andersen Race Park for the fourth round in the Florida Karting Championship Series (FKCS). While Alex would pull double duty in both the TaG Junior and Rotax Junior classes, younger brother Mikey would see action in his return to the series in Rotax Mini Max.
With the event's official practice day being held under sunny skies on Friday, the weather forecast for Saturday's action would look bleak as drivers prepared for wet weather racing. Surprisingly, the rain held off until mid-afternoon, as all classes were able to get in warm-up, qualifying and prefinals before the heavens opened.
"We have learned from the past that when it rains hard here in Palmetto, the racing can be delayed or cancelled so the prefinal results were very important," expressed Alex Hornborg. "I worked hard to come to grips with a new engine package on Friday and it paid off with a podium result on Saturday."
After turning some very fast and competitive times in the morning warm-up, Hornborg missed the pole position by a scant .154 and would post the second quickest time of the session. With drafting not permitted during qualifying and Hornborg on the rear bumper of his teammate, Alex's fastest lap was taken away forcing him to stand on his second quickest time of the session. Showing his consistency in lap time, Hornborg maintained his second starting position.
Looking to improve his position during the ten-lap prefinal, Alex tried to get a jump on the field but quickly slotted into the second position. Turning the same lap times as the leader, the duo pulled away from the field with Alex going on to claim a second place podium result.
With heavy rains and high winds moving into the area, a downpour ensued and the racing surface became impassable. With all classes completing at least their prefinal, officials deemed the day official and awarded results based on the heat race finishes.
Younger brother Mikey Hornborg would be back at his first FKCS race since breaking his arm in February and would see action in the Rotax Mini Max class. After completing only 12 laps during Friday's test session, Mikey would be in for a fun filled day of racing on Saturday. Qualifying deep in the field, the Floridian pilot would be forced to try and make his way forward and improve his main event starting position.
"The Mini Max class competition is very tough," expressed Mikey. "I think I am still a little nervous after my hard flip a few months ago but I am getting back into the groove. This is my first real race weekend and I am getting more comfortable with each and every outing."
The Mini Max class was one of a few that were able to complete their main events. Starting on slicks and forced into a red flag on lap three for rain, the Mini Max competitors were sent back to the paddock to make the switch to wet weather tires. Having never competed in the rain, Mikey was ready to gain a lot of experience in only a few short laps as he consistently improved his lap times throughout the final.
Back to the track on Sunday, Alex would be back behind the wheel of his Tony Loniewski tuned Tony Kart in the Rotax Junior class. With weather being a factor throughout the day, drivers opened the morning qualifying session on wet weather tires. With tricky track conditions, Alex would qualify his Tony Kart in the eighth position.
Looking to improve throughout the day, Hornborg gained one position in Sunday's heat race to finish seventh but would run into some bad luck at the start of the main event. After being involved in a first corner incident, Hornborg would continue on track to salvage championship points as he crossed the stripe just inside the top fifteen.
Enjoying a few weekends off, Alex and Mikey will continue to hone their skills by testing at the Ocala Gran Prix facility in Ocala, Florida. Looking forward to the next North Florida Rotax Max Challenge event in early May, the duo will look for race wins and podium results.
