| Indy Karting Series Announces 2012 $5k Champion Challenge |
| |
Champions of select Indy Karting Series classes will earn a whopping $1,000 as part of the new $5k Champion Challenge, series officials announced.
Champions in five classes – Yamaha Junior Supercan, Yamaha Senior Sportsman Heavy, Clone Heavy, TaG Heavy, and Shifter – will earn $1,000 in addition to the Driving Force championship trophy and other prizes at the 2012 awards banquet.
Drivers aged 18 years or older will receive a $1,000 check at the banquet with those under 18 receiving a savings bond or check made out to the driver’s parent or guardian.
“This is our way of giving back to our competitors,” IKS President Mike Richey said, “rewarding them for all of their hard work and money spent in the sport. We hope the $5k Champion Challenge will bring a renewed attitude of competition back to our series.”
Richey said two of the five classes, Clone and TaG, run a light and heavy category. “We purposely went with the heavy classes for our program,” Richey added, “because some of our associates cannot make the lighter weight classes but still deserve an opportunity to be rewarded. We know most of our lighter-weight drivers can easily and safely add weight to get a chance at the award as well.”
In order to be eligible, drivers in each class must compete in all seven of the club’s 2012 races, passing technical inspection and starting the event. Additionally, each class must start a minimum of six competitors in each race.
IKS opens its 2012 season with the annual Jackson Oil & Solvents Grand Prix at the world-class New Castle (IN) Motorsports Park on April 28-29. Other events on tap this year are the Seymour Grand Prix in the streets of Seymour, IN, on June 30-July 1; Jackson Oil & Solvents Grand Prix at G & J Raceway (Camden, OH) on July 21-22; Portage Perch Fest and Gran Prix at Founder’s Park in Portage (IN) on Aug. 11-12; Little Italy Grand Prix in the streets of Clinton (IN) on Aug. 18-19; Vincennes Grand Prix in the streets of Vincennes (IN) on Sept. 29-30; and the annual Mooresville Grand Prix at Mooresville, Indiana’s ultra-fast Pioneer Park on Oct. 6-7.
All events are two-day affairs with practice, qualifying, and class pre-finales on Saturday with practice and finales on Sunday. Other IKS classes for 2012 include Kid Kart, Yamaha Junior Sportsman, Yamaha Senior Sportsman Medium and Masters, TaG Lite, and Clone Lite.
“More than anything,” Richey said, “we want everybody to have some fun in 2012 competing in the $5k Champion Challenge.” |
