| Industry News: A New Year But Same Results for P1 Engines |
| |
Traveling across the country for the opening round of the World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer's Cup program, California based P1 Engines powered drivers stood on the podium at the WKA Daytona Kartweek. Taking home top honors in the TaG class was Georgia's Chris Wehrheim as he helped continue P1 Engines race win streak at WKA events dating back to mid 2011.
"It was a great week in Florida as several of P1 Engines powered drivers were seen at the front of the field," expressed Jesus Vasquez. "Though we only came home with one victory, a lot of our drivers had great starts to their 2012 championship chase."
After claiming the TaG 1 final victory on Friday afternoon, Wehrheim also saw action in Saturday's TaG 2 event. Though a podium was out of sight, a solid seventh place result is a good start to the season.
Joining Wehrheim in the TaG divisions were Texan Mason Chelootz and Californian Raquel Martinez. Chelootz managed a top ten result in Friday's action coming home sixth but would be involved in an on track incident in TaG 2, finishing down the running order. Making up for his TaG results, Chelootz scored an impressive second place result in the Leopard Only class and will look to stand atop the podium at the next event in March.
In her first Senior event in WKA competition, Martinez would see action in both TaG 1 and TaG 2 as well as Komet Lite and Heavy. Though struggling in the TaG divisions, Martinez would score a pair of top fives in the Komet classes. After qualifying sixth for Komet Heavy, Martinez moved forward to claim the fourth position while in Komet Lite, the up-and-coming female driver would cross the stripe in third.

P1 Engines powered driver Zane Smith would make the move into the junior divisions and would see action in Komet Junior Lite and Heavy. After a solid qualifying effort that saw Smith inside the top ten, he was disqualified post qualifying due to not conforming to the weight regulations. Having to start shotgun on the field of 40, Smith powered his way forward to 12th in a head turning performance. Adding to his 12th place result, Smith also scored a 13th place finish in Komet Junior Lite.
Some other great runs for P1 Engines powered drivers included Cory Towels, who garnered a fourth place finish in Komet Junior Heavy as well as Jarret Donkuvish, who claimed a top ten in his first national event in the Yamaha Senior Heavy division.
Vasquez added, "January will see no racing for P1 Engines. We will shift our focus to a heavy testing schedule as we look to prepare for the second round of the WKA program in March. Along with testing, we will also be preparing all of our Rok TT powerplants which were the motor of choice at Carolina Motorsports Park in 2011."
