2012 Season Kicks Off Quickly in January

People not associated with karting typically ask us racers what we do during the winter months. For many, the answer is this…"we drive south until we can to find a place where we can get on-track". This past Saturday night, we said 'good-bye' to 2011 and 'hello' to 2012 and with the flipping of the calendar pages comes new changes to don our helmets. The past season was a busy one for sure and the coming 12 months look to be no different. The anticipation for the new racing season and a fresh start will be short-lived, however, as the winter programs get underway in the south this month, as does the swap meet and kart show schedule for the northern states, as everyone prepares for the 2012 season.

Up first is the back-to-back weekends that make up the 2012 Florida Winter Tour. The first stop of this season will take the series back to the Palm Beach International Raceway in West Palm Beach, FL. The January 6-8 weekend starts with the ‘Formula Kart’ line-up of classes while the popular international-filled Rotax Max Challenge weekend will follow on January 13-15. The ‘Formula Kart’ weekend hosts seven classes with a mixture of shifter and TaG categories. The Rotax weekend holds the official seven categories that make up the Rotax Max Challenge, as drivers from around the world will take part in the three-event program. Visit http://www.floridawintertour.com for more information.

At the end of the month, the Rotax community in the western half of North America will kick-off their winter program with the fifth running of the Gatorz Challenge of the Americas. The program will make its first-ever visit to the Musselman Honda Kart Circuit in Tucson, Arizona on January 27-29. Tickets to the Rotax Grand Finals and Rotax Grand Nationals will be on the line. eKartingNews.com will start its ‘Trackside Live’ program early for 2012, following the entire Challenge of the Americas trail. Regional racing gets underway as well during January as the growing Florida Karting Championship Series starts its 2012 season. They will open up at the Homestead Karting facility in Homestead, Florida on January 27-29. The World Karting Association regional program will host six events on the year, traveling across the state of Florida, completing the championship program in June. Click over to http://www.flwkasprintseries.com to see where else the FKCS program will be in 2012.

For those unable to travel to warmer weather during the snowy months, you can get a kick-start to your 2012 season with kart shows and swap meets. The Mid-State Kart Club Winter Kart Show & Swap Meet in Springfield, Illinois on January 28 will be a busy affair under the roof of the Illinois State Fairgrounds Orr Building in Springfield, IL. A number of vendors will have new and used equipment on display and for sale in what is a growing winter event. To learn more about becoming a vendor or for directions to attend, visit http://www.winterkartshow.com . The Ohio Valley Kart Club (OVKA) will hold their 26th annual swap meet a week later at the Clark Country Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ohio. Over 200 booths are expected for this great show. For more information, head to http://www.ovka.com .

Ladies and gentlemen, the 2012 season is underway. We hope to see you at a track soon!
