Article by: Keith Shampine - WKA

There were no double winners on day one of the Margay Sprint Championships for the WKA George Kugler / Bridgestone Manufacturer's Cup Series driven by Mazda at the Daytona Int'l Speedway Sprint Track. After a full day of Wednesday practice and a morning practice Thursday, 11 different racers drove to victory on the opening day of racing at the Sprint Track.

Dakota Pesek wheeled his Arrow to the win in the day's first race, Yamaha Supercan Lite. Pesek bested Anthony Snow by a cool 7.5 seconds in the 14-lapper. MKP Birel driver Blake Deister ran third, Pa.'s Mark Boos fourth and James Brock fifth. Twenty-seven karts started.

Zach Holden drove his deuce to the win in Cadet Final 1. Holden outlasted a fierce battle with Jared Cordova for the win. Behind Holden and Cordova were David Malukas, who's moved from Birel to an Arrow for the 2012 season, Brandon Lemke and Kaden Harter.

A Merlin beat out a couple of Tony Karts for the triumph in Komet Jr Heavy. Illinois' Kyle Kalish won over home-state racer Ashley Rogero and 2011 Triple Crown champion Joel Jens. Corey Towles was fourth and James Bennett rounded out the top five. Six to ten were Mike McAndrews, Austin Osborne, Derek Dignan, Kody Evans and Darren Brubaker.

After going winless in 2011 Man Cup racing, Atlanta's Chris Wehrheim kicked off the 2012 season in fine fashion with the win in TaG Final 1. Sam Beasley ended up almost a second back in the runner-up spot. Cal Stewart had his best Man Cup run with a third-place result; NASCAR Sprint Cup star A.J. Allmendiner wheeled his Arrow to a fourth-place finish, while double TaG national champion Robert Bujdoso rounded out the top-five on his PCR.

Jared Cordova won the day's fifth race in Yamaha Sportsman Heavy. Zach Holden nearly earned his second win of the day but had to settle for second. Kaleb Allison was third, Nick Luedeke fourth and Lemke fifth.

The Yamaha Rookie Final 1 main went to Max Kaeser. The youngster won by 0.084 seconds over New Jersey's Connor Ferris. Jason Welage was third, Tyler Ferris fourth and Samuel Paley fifth of 27 starters.

The largest class of the day was Yamaha Jr Lite with an impressive 49 starters. New Jersey Top Kart racer Garrett Johnston picked up his first Man Cup win in awhile. Johnston beat out Jake Craig and Brandon Jarsocrak for the victory. Kalish was fourth; MRP Birel racer Grant Quinlan completed the top five. Six to ten was Emerson Reed, Gresham Wagner, Ryan Raffa, Skylar Robinson and Jared Thomas.

Cal Stewart was impressive Thursday. The Illinois pilot won the Parilla Leopard main after finishing third in TaG. Texan Mason Chelootz ran second, Bujdoso third, Jacob Knueven fourth and PCR racer Kyle Smith fifth. Six to ten of the 39 starters was Zachariah Hawley, Colton Ramsey, Nick Johnston, Mark Boos and Jacob Donald.

Chelootz came back in the next race to win the Komet Heavy final. Chelootz bested Donald for the win. It was Donald's first start in the Komet senior division after a successful junior career. Patrick Olsen was third, Raquel Martinez fourth and Brock fifth for the second time on the day.

Brandon Lemke completed a fine day with a win in Komet Sportsman. Johnny Smith was a solid second place ahead of Cadet winner Holden. Braden Eves was fourth and Trenton Tucker fifth.

The last race of the day - TaG Masters - went to Indiana Birel pilot Steve Schiewer. Multi-time national champ Jeff Jewell was second, Brian McHattie third, Bobby Cummings fourth and Brad Sanders fifth. TaG Masters racers will go at it again Friday in Final 2.
