Daytona Flat Track Ready for WKA Dirt World Championships
Article by: WKA PitBoard

The following is the first of three previews provided by WKA on the upcoming Daytona KartWeek

For the third year in a row the World Karting Association Dirt World Championships is set for the spotlight in oval-track karting at one of the biggest stages in the world for motorsports, the Daytona Int’l Speedway.

Dirt teams from throughout the country will be headed to Daytona Beach this Christmas weekend with hopes of bringing home a WKA national championship, which will be awarded to all national-class feature winners as a part of the 2011 Road to Daytona Dirt Program.

The new program culminates with next weekend’s World Championships at the Daytona Flat Track, a quarter-mile limestone-based oval located outside turns one and two of the DIS superspeedway.

The Road To Daytona Program offered WKA national race winners at this past season’s races at Dumplin Valley, Tenn.; Selinsgrove, Pa.; and Batesburg, S.C.; guaranteed starting spots to next week’s Daytona KartWeek dirt event. Class point champions from WKA’s Divisional Dirt Series were also sent invitations guaranteeing them starting spots in their Daytona fields. These race winners and series champions, along with hundreds of other dirt racers in attendance, will race for 2011 national championships next week at Daytona as a part of the new program.

In all, 23 national titles will be on the line, including a full slate of Jr 1, Jr 2, Jr 3 and senior Animal flat- and champ-kart classes. Box Stock (Clone) flat-kart divisions are offered for all age levels, and the flatheads still run as senior national classes with Raptor Heavy on Wednesday’s card and Raptor Lite on Thursday.

But the nearly two-dozen national classes is just the tip of the iceberg for action at the Daytona Flat Track next week.

A new twist in the Dirt World Championships comes with the addition of five Florida Champ Kart League (FCKL) classes and the Unlimited All-Stars, which make their first appearance at the new Daytona oval.

The FCKL will run three classes Wednesday, Dec. 28 and cap KartWeek with a pair of divisions Thursday, Dec. 29. A number of FCKL regulars have pre-entered for the event and many of them will run WKA’s national champ kart divisions, which should boost KartWeek champ-kart fields across the board.

Many of the best 2-cycle dirt racers in the country have next week’s Daytona show in their tracks with the running of the UAS 2012 season opener at Daytona, including the likes of North Carolina’s Robbie Yow, Georgia’s Shay Chavous and 2011 UAS national champion John Decker.

The UAS main goes off as the sixth race Thursday. Many UAS shoes will also run Wednesday’s WKA Unlimited 2-Cycle affair.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a dirt race without some cool cash on the line, and Thursday’s action will see the Animal Heavy Money Race take center stage with $1,000 going to the victor. Last year, Florida’s Chris Robinson beat out Chavous in a quick 20-lap Money Race that nearly went wire to wire. Chavous will be back this year battling the likes of Brian Hunter, Bradley Hauser and Daytona’s own “Fast” Eddie Alkire, among a host of others.

Daytona’s gates swing open Tuesday, Dec. 27. Dirt competitors can begin moving into their parking spots Tuesday morning with pre-entry pickup and at-track registration opening at 11 a.m.

While Manufacturer’s Cup sprint and Road Racing enduro kart teams move in Tuesday as well, the only on-track action on the opening day of KartWeek will be practice at the Dirt Track, which runs from noon to 6 p.m.

Two days of dirt racing go off Wednesday and Thursday. The Daytona Flat Track will be closed Friday as many racers will head to nearby Volusia Speedway Park for the its Winter Nationals on Friday.
