WKA PitBoard: News You Can Use for Daytona KartWeek
Article by: WKA PitBoard

Going to Daytona for KartWeek? Here are some things you may want to know.

First, be prepared for some serious competition. Based on the number of pre-entries, this will be the best attended event in years with large fields in the Manufacturer's Cup, Road Race and Dirt. If you haven't pre-entered, you can still do so at the track beginning December 27.

Now here, by series are some things you may want to know before heading south, or north to Daytona Beach this holiday season.

Manufacturer's Cup

WKA has received several questions regarding the change to allow Cadet Karts in the Yamaha and Komet Piston Port Sportsman Classes. These Cadet chassis have a wheelbase between 35" to 41" as compared to the standard karts which have a wheelbase between 39.75" and 43". Notice that Cadet and standard kart wheelbase specifications overlap between 39.75" and 40". The question is what differentiates between a Cadet and a standard kart if the wheelbase falls between these two numbers?

The answer is the bodywork. A kart with the wheelbase falling between 39.75" and 41" having CIK style bodywork is considered to be a standard kart and one with Cadet bodywork is considered to be a Cadet kart. The next question is, "how will the scale operators will differentiate between the standard and Cadet karts." The answer is that, just as in the TAG classes, weight stickers will be issued during registration and will be affixed to the karts. The wheelbase will also be measured in post-race tech to ensure compliance.

The initial weights in the Yamaha and Komet Piston Port Sportsman classes are listed in the 2012 WKA Technical Manual as follows;

Komet Piston Port standard chassis 240 lbs.
Komet Piston Port Cadet chassis 250 lbs.
Yamaha Sportsman Lite standard chassis 240 lbs.
Yamaha Sportsman Lite Cadet chassis 250 lbs.
Yamaha Sportsman Heavy standard chassis 250 lbs.
Yamaha Sportsman Heavy Cadet chassis 260 lbs.

The weight differential between standard and Cadet chassis was based on the experience gained in 2011 in the successful Yamaha Rookie class. However, additional data will be collected through weight surveys conducted at the scales at Daytona, and the Trustees will also be collecting chassis and driver weights. The overall weights and weight differential will be reviewed at a special Board of Trustees conference call on January 4, 2012 and any necessary adjustments will be made before the next Manufacturer's Cup event.

National Road Racing Series

Weight surveys will also be conducted in the 100 cc Pipe Heavy and WKA Sprint Final 1 & 2 classes at the NRRS event. WKA has received a proposal to reduce the weights in Pipe Heavy from Yamaha 395 lbs., Piston Port - 420 lbs., and Comer P51 - 435 lbs. to Yamaha 380 lbs., Piston Port - 405 lbs., and Comer P51 - 420 lbs. There is also request to increase the weights in the WKA Sprint Final 1 & 2 from Yamaha, ARC & PRD - 360 lbs., Piston Port - 385 lbs., and Comer P51 - 395 lbs. back to the weights used in 2010. In addition to the weight surveys, the competitors in these classes will be polled for their input.

Dirt and National Road Racing Series 4-cycle

The latest news for the 4-cycle competitors is the Board of Trustees' decision to allow the Burris aftermarket piston in the Animal classes. These pistons are available in what are referred to as "half sizes" or smaller increments. This should help extend the life of the Animal cylinder. This change is effective immediately.

And there is one more thing for the WKA competitors who are running in the Clone classes. Be aware that this event is being run under the engine rules published in the 2012 WKA Technical Manual. It has come to our attention that another sanctioning body has made rule changes in a carburetor jet and the timing of the engine. These changes have not been approved by the WKA Board of Trustees.

WKA District 7 Trustee Election Ballots were mailed December 12
WKA's CPA firm, Russell & Byrd, mailed ballots for the 2011 Trustee Election to all WKA Master Members in District 7 on Monday, December 12. Completed ballots must be returned to Russell & Byrd by Friday, December 30. Any WKA Master Member not receiving a ballot by Monday, December 19 should contact Marie Borsuk, WKA Business Manager, at 704-455-1605 to request another ballot. (Districts 1, 4, and 10 each nominated only one candidate, so no ballots will be mailed in those districts.)

It is vital to WKA's continued success that we elect our most qualified members to serve as trustees. Our trustees represent your interests in the Association's operation. They also represent WKA to you and the karting community in general. In addition to attending trustee meetings, they may participate in technical or series competition committees, work on special projects, and support the divisional and regional series within their districts. The Trustee should be comfortable working in a group as decisions are generally the result of consensus. The Trustee should also be able to set aside personal interests and make recommendations and decisions in the best interests of the WKA.

Please give the candidates your thoughtful consideration and cast your ballot accordingly.
